Description: Bereits seit fast hundert Jahren zieht sich vor Gericht ein Erbschaftsstreit zwischen den Familien Gregor und Prus, und gerade heute soll das endgültige Urteil ergehen. Albert Gregor, der die klagende Partei vertritt, kommt ins Büro seines Rechtsanwalts Kolenatý, um sich nach dem Ausgang zu erkundigen. Er trifft jedoch nur den Referendar Vítek an. Bald darauf erscheint im Büro Víteks Tochter Kristina, eine angehende Opernsängerin, und erzählt begeistert von der berühmten Sängerin Emilia Marty, die wenig später in Begleitung des Anwalts Kolenatý in der Tür erscheint. Marty erkundigt sich nach dem Stand von Gregors Gerichtsprozess und verblüfft alle Anwesenden mit ihren Kenntnissen der Ereignisse, die sich vor hundert Jahren abspielten. Sie weiß sogar von einer Affäre des längst verstorbenen Barons Prus mit einer gewissen Ellian MacGregor und kann genau den Ort benennen, an dem einige bislang noch nicht bekannte Papiere, darunter auch das Testament von Baron Prus, zu finden seien. Kolenatý glaubt ihr nicht, aber auf den Druck Albert Gregors hin begibt er sich gezwungenermaßen in Prusʼ Haus, um die genannten Dokumente dort zu suchen. Nach einer Weile kehrt er zusammen mit Gregors Gegenspieler Jaroslav Prus zurück, und die beiden verkünden, am von Marty benannten Ort tatsächlich ein Testament und andere bislang unbekannte Dokumente gefunden zu haben.

Description: Hinter den Kulissen des Theaters unterhalten sich die Bühnenarbeiter über den glanzvollen Auftritt der Sängerin Emilia Marty. Zahlreiche Verehrer warten auf sie, darunter auch Jaroslav Prus. Sein Sohn Janek trifft sich im Theater mit seinem Schatz Kristina. Diese ist von Martys Persönlichkeit vollkommen fasziniert und möchte ebenfalls eine berühmte Künstlerin werden. Marty erscheint und empfängt der Reihe nach ihre Verehrer – unter ihnen auch Albert Gregor und der schwachsinnige Hauk-Šendorf, der in ihr seine verflossene Liebe Eugenia Montez erblickt. Ermüdet schickt Marty schließlich alle weg, es bleibt nur Jaroslav Prus. Der fragt Marty nach der Geliebten seines Vorfahren aus – der Sängerin Ellian MacGregor, die die Mutter eines unehelichen Kinds des Barons war. In den Urkunden findet sie sich jedoch unter einem anderen Namen – als Elina Makropulos. Marty interessiert sich jedoch vor allem für ein versiegeltes Kuvert, das sich zwischen den übrigen Papieren befindet, doch Prus weigert sich, es ihr zu überreichen. Es erscheint Albert Gregor, um Marty seine Liebe zu gestehen – die ihn jedoch zurückweist. Auch Janek hat sich in Marty verliebt. Die Sängerin bittet ihn darum, ihr aus dem Haus seines Vaters jenen geheimnisvollen Umschlag zu besorgen, in diesem Moment tritt jedoch Prus hinzu und willigt ein, Marty den Umschlag zum Lohn für eine gemeinsame Nacht zu übergeben.

Description: Marty hat ihren Teil der Vereinbarung erfüllt und verlangt von Prus den versprochenen Umschlag. Sie erhält ihn, doch Prus ist enttäuscht – er hätte von ihrer Seite keine derartige unbeteiligte Kühle erwartet. Ein Dienstbote bringt die tragische Nachricht, dass Janek sich das Leben genommen hat, nachdem er ahnte, dass sein Vater eine Nacht mit Marty verbrachte. Der verwirrte Hauk kommt, um Marty die gemeinsame Flucht nach Spanien anzubieten. Sie erklärt sich einverstanden, doch in diesem Augenblick erscheinen Gregor, Kolenatý und Vítek mit seiner Tochter Kristina. Sie haben viele Fragen, denn nachdem Marty ein Erinnerungsfoto für Kristina unterschrieben hatte, mussten sie feststellen, dass ihr Autogramm identisch mit den Unterschriften auf den fast ein Jahrhundert alten Dokumenten ist. Sie bedrängen Marty immer mehr, bis die Sängerin schließlich ihr Geheimnis verrät. Ihr wahrer Name ist Elina Makropulos, und sie war die Tochter der Griechen Hieronymus Makropulos, der sich als Leibarzt von Kaiser Rudolph II. um die Herstellung eines Elixiers der ewigen Jugend bemühte. Er erprobte es an seiner eigenen Tochter, die nunmehr bereits 337 Jahre alt ist. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte hat sie mehrfach ihre Identität gewechselt, unter anderem lebte sie unter dem Namen Ellian MacGregor und war damals Prusʼ Geliebte, doch war sie auch die spanische Zigeunerin Eugenia Montez, die Hauk-Šendorf in ihr erkannte. Nunmehr tritt sie als Emilia Marty auf und hat sich in die ganze Angelegenheit eingemischt, weil sie das Kuvert mit dem Rezept des Elixiers sucht – eben jenen Umschlag, den sie für eine gemeinsam verbrachte Nacht von Jaroslav Prus erhalten hat. Das Elixier wirkte nämlich nur 300 Jahre, so dass Marty, wenn sie denn weiter leben will, eine weitere Dosis einnehmen muss. Sie stellt jedoch fest, dass sie keine Freude am Leben mehr hat: ob seiner endlos langen Dauer hat es für sie jeden Sinn verloren und bereitet ihr nur noch Überdruss. Sie übergibt das Rezept Kristina und bietet ihr damit ewige Jugend, Schönheit und Ruhm. Das junge Mädchen jedoch verbrennt das Papier und entscheidet sich damit für ein zwar kurzes, aber erfülltes Leben.

Description: Již téměř sto let se táhne soudní proces ve věci dědictví, který vede rod Gregorů a Prusů, a právě dnes má být vynesen konečný verdikt. Albert Gregor, představitel žalující strany, přichází do kanceláře svého advokáta Kolenatého, aby se zeptal na výsledek. Nachází však jen solicitátora Vítka. Do kanceláře přichází Vítkova dcera Kristina, začínající operní zpěvačka, a nadšeně vypráví o slavné pěvkyni Emilii Marty, která se po chvíli objeví ve dveřích v doprovodu advokáta Kolenatého. Marty se ptá na stav Gregorova procesu a všechny přítomné udivuje znalostmi událostí, které se odehrály před stovkou let. Ví dokonce o vztahu dávno zemřelého barona Pruse a jeho milenky Ellian Mac Gregor a sděluje přesně místo, kde jsou uloženy dosud neznámé dokumenty včetně Prusovy závěti. Kolenatý jí nevěří, ale na nátlak Alberta Gregora je nucen vydat se do Prusova domu zmiňované listiny hledat. Po chvíli se vrací i s Gregorovým soudním rivalem, Jaroslavem Prusem. Přicházejí se zprávou, že na místě, které Marty označila, opravdu našli závěť a další dosud neznámé dokumenty.

Description: V zákulisí divadla si zaměstnanci vyprávějí o úspěchu vystoupení zpěvačky Emilie Marty. Čekají na ni zástupy ctitelů, mezi nimi i Jaroslav Prus. Jeho syn Janek se v divadle setkává se svou milou Kristinou. Ta je oslněná osobností Marty a chce se rovněž stát slavnou umělkyní. Přichází Marty a postupně přijímá své obdivovatele včetně Alberta Gregora a slabomyslného Hauka-Šendorfa, který v ní vidí svou dávnou lásku Eugenii Montez. Znavená Marty pak všechny posílá pryč a zůstává jen Jaroslav Prus. Vyptává se Marty na milenku svého předka – zpěvačku Ellian Mac Gregor, která byla matkou baronova nemanželského dítěte. V matrice je však zapsána pod jiným jménem – jako Elina Makropulos. Marty však zajímá především zapečetěná obálka, která je uložena mezi ostatními listinami a kterou jí Prus odmítá vydat. Přichází Albert Gregor, aby Marty vyznal lásku – ta ho však odmítá. Také Janek se do Marty zamiloval. Zpěvačka jej žádá, aby pro ni v otcově domě získal onu tajemnou obálku, ale vtom vchází Prus a dohodne se s Marty, že jí obálku předá za společně strávenou noc.

Description: Marty splnila svou část dohody a požaduje po Prusovi slíbenou obálku. Dostává ji, ale Prus je zklamán – neočekával z její strany takový neúčastný chlad. Sluha přináší tragickou zprávu. Janek spáchal sebevraždu, když vytušil, že jeho otec strávil noc s Marty. Přichází pomatený Hauk a nabízí Marty společný útěk do Španělska. Ta souhlasí, ale vtom přichází Gregor, Kolenatý a Vítek s dcerou Kristinou. Mají mnoho otázek: poté, co Marty podepsala Kristině upomínkovou fotografii totiž zjistili, že podpis je shodný s podpisy na téměř sto let starých dokumentech. Naléhají na Marty stále víc, až pěvkyně prozradí své tajemství. Její pravé jméno je Elina Makropulos a byla dcerou Řeka Hieronyma Makropulose, který se jako osobní lékař císaře Rudolfa II. pokusil o vytvoření elixíru mládí. Vyzkoušel jej na své dceři a ta nyní žije již 337 let. V průběhu staletí několikrát změnila totožnost, žila mimo jiné i pod jménem Ellian Mac Gregor a byla tehdy Prusovou milenkou, byla též španělskou cikánkou Eugenií Montez, kterou v ní poznal Hauk-Šendorf. Nyní vystupuje jako Emilie Marty a do celé kauzy se připletla, protože hledala obálku s receptem na elixír mládí – tu obálku, kterou jí za společnou noc vyměnil Jaroslav Prus. Elixír totiž působí jen 300 let a tak, chce-li Marty dále žít, musí vypít novou dávku. Ona ale zjišťuje, že ji život netěší: je jím unavena a znechucena, protože za tu nekonečně dlouhou dobu její bytí zcela ztratilo svůj smysl. Recept odevzdá Kristině, nabízí jí tím věčné mládí, krásu a slávu. Mladá dívka ale listinu spálí – volí tak sice krátký, ale smysluplný život.

Description: The Court battle concerning the inheritance affair between the Gregor and Prus families has been continuing for almost one hundred years, and today the Supreme Court is to give its final verdict. Albert Gregor, representing the plaintiff, arrives at the offices of his advocate Kolenatý, to ask for the verdict. He only finds the solicitor Vítek, however. Meanwhile, Vítek‘s daughter Kristina, a young beginner opera singer, arrives at the offices and enthuses about the famous and somewhat mysterious singer Emilia Marty. At that moment Marty appears at the doors to the office accompanied by the advocate Kolenatý. She has come to ask about the Gregor court case, and all those present are astounded by her knowledge of events that had taken place one hundred years previously, and also by the fact that she knew about the relationship between the long-dead Baron Prus and his mistress Ellian Macgregor. She even knew the exact place where the unknown documents were stored, including the will of Baron Prus. Kolenatý does not believe her, but under pressure from Albert Gregor he is forced to return to Prus’s house to search for the documents. After a while the advocate Kolenatý returns together with Gregor’s court rival, Jaroslav Prus. They arrive with the news that at the site that was indicated by Marty, they had indeed found some old, until then unknown, paperwork.

Description: In the wings of the theatre the staff are discussing the successful performance of the singer Emilia Marty. Two admirers are waiting for the singer here, amongst them Jaroslav Prus. His son Janek meets his sweetheart Kristina at the theatre. Kristina is completely fascinated by Marty and she also wants to become a famous artist. Marty arrives and received her admirers including Albert Gregor and the feeble-minded Hauk-Šendorf, who is reminded of his old flame Eugenia Montez by the singer. The tired Marty sends everybody away. Only Prus remains, who informs Marty about the secret mistress of his ancestor, the singer Ellen Macgregor, the mother of the Baron’s illegitimate child. In the register, however, she had been entered under a different name – Elina Makropulos. Marty is however interested in the secret envelope which is hidden amongst the other documents and which Prus refuses to hand over. Albert Gregor to tell her of his love, which is not returned, however. Janek has also fallen in love with Marty but he is too shy to say anything. Marty encourages him to obtain the secret envelope without his father‘s knowledge, but suddenly his father, Prus, enters, who says that she could have the envelope if she spends the night with him.

Description: Marty has fulfilled her side of the agreement and now she asks Prus for the promised envelope. She receives it, but Prus is not pleased –he did not expect such coldness from her. His servant is looking for him; he has some tragic news. Prus’s son Janek had committed suicide out of his love for Marty. The confused Hauk enters with an offer of a joint elopement to Spain. Marty agrees to go with him, but at that moment Gregor, Kolenatý and Vítek arrive with Kristina. They have many questions: after Marty has signed a souvenir photograph for Kristina they discover that her signature is the same as that on the century-old documents. They urge Marty to such an extent that the singer starts to relate her unbelievable tale. Her real name is Elina Makropulos, and was the daughter of the Greek Hieronymous Makropulos who, as the personal physician to Emperor Rudolf II, had attempted to produce an elixir of youth. He tried it on his daughter, and she was now 337 years of age. Over the centuries she had changed her identity; amongst other names had used Ellian Macgregor, and had been the lover of Prus, and had also been the Spanish gypsy Eugenia Montez, who had known Hauk-Šendorf. Now she was posing as Emilia Marty and had become entangled in the in the affair because she was looking for the envelope with the recipe for the elixir of youth – the same envelope for which Jaroslav Prus had given to her in exchange for a night spent together. The elixir works for only three hundred years and, should Marty wish to live longer, she must drink another draught. However, she realises that she no longer enjoys life; she is tired and weary, and life had lost its meaning. She wants to die, and decides not to drink the new elixir. She gives the recipe to Kristina, and offers her everlasting youth, beauty and fame. The young girl burns the paper, however, and chooses instead a short, but meaningful life.
