Passion: In music, this means first of all the report of the suffering and death of Jesus. But would any art be conceivable without passion, without burning passion? Suffering creates many things. It can be the goal – or a means to an end – of a theologically understood salvation, a general spiritual overcoming, a dissolution of boundaries. Suffering can also mobilize creative powers and become the starting point for new artistic deeds.
This time, the Ouverture spiritual brings together works that make what has been endured tangible, what has been lived through, what has been suffered, what has been obsessively negotiated. Some even demands extreme contemplation, often close to suffering, from the performers - and the audience is not spared unexpected experiences on sounding crossroads. As already intended by the Greek tragedy, lamentation and shuddering may lead to catharsis, to spiritual purification.
Penderecki's monumental St. Luke Passion marks the beginning. It builds bridges to the Renaissance, to the Holy Week eclipse; to the Baroque, to Biber and to Bach's Mass in B minor; to classical music, to Mozart and to Beethoven's Christ on the Mount of Olives; to Romanticism, to Liszt's enigmatic late work Via crucis. And into the 20th century – to Galina Ustvolskaja, in whose music suffering and passion come together in an exemplary manner. Important works of film history, such as Pier Paolo Pasolini's Il Vangelo secondo Matteo, reflect the theme in their own way. Alessandro Stradella's San Giovanni Battista forms a baroque counterpart to Strauss' Salome. The last evening combines all the passions once again - with Bernd Alois Zimmermann's trumpet concerto Nobody knows de trouble I see, which rebels against racism, and Mahler's second, the "Resurrection Symphony":
