The newspaper The Times does not skimp on praise when it comes to Víkingur Ólafsson's updated edition of the classic, which is now on album. Ólafsson's previous piano interpretations of Bach compositions have also been praised, and in 2019 was named Album of the Year by BBC Music Magazine. The fresh versions of almost 300-year-old pieces have the ability to touch in all their simplicity. It sounds both familiar and unexpected. "The Icelandic pianist has an almost unique ability to let counterpoint sing," wrote The Spectator.

As mythical as the peculiar Canadian pianist Gould was, the Goldberg Variations have been perceived just as magical by music lovers around the world. The details of the 80-minute solo work have been studied in the smallest detail. It consists of two arias, one at the beginning and one at the end, with 30 variations in between. The key is the continuous bass and it is the bass theme that is cleverly varied and adorned with ornaments, melodies and changing tempos. Since Bach wrote for harpsichord and organ with double keyboards, it is an extra challenge on a piano to get the fingers to get along, often with crossed hands as a result.

It has been said that Bach wrote the work for a count who needed music to help him fall asleep. But there is no sleepiness in the music, and it is known today that the pieces were started even before Bach met the count. The person who performed the work at the premiere was harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, hence the name.

In any case, Bach has given us invaluable music that is now traveling towards eternity in Víkingur Ólafsson's hands.

Men det finns inget sövande i musiken, och man vet idag att styckena påbörjades redan innan Bach träffat greven. Den som framförde verket vid premiären var cembalisten Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, och därav namnet.

Under alla omständigheter har Bach gett oss ovärderlig musik som nu färdas mot evigheten i Víkingur Ólafssons händer.
