It is the most performed and recorded violin concerto in music history - and it is the perfect prelude to the second country portrait of the season, which takes us to the Scandinavian countries.
Sibelius' Violin Concerto takes you into the austere beauty of his Finnish homeland with lakes, forests, wide plains and mythical creatures. The virtuosity with which the concert paints these sound images demands everything from the soloist. The German-Spanish-Malaysian violinist Elias David Moncado has won numerous violin competitions and is one of the most sensitive interpreters of his generation. If not him, then hardly anyone will be able to bridge the gap between dexterity and emotional expression.

Grieg's Norwegian Dances may not be featured in commercials as often as his "Morning Mood" from the Peer Gynt Suite, but they are certainly Norway's most beautiful, atmospheric and authentic commercial tunes. As such, they also stand in the best tradition: Grieg's composition – originally for piano solo – was the Norwegian's response to the extremely successful Slavic Dances by Antonín Dvořák and the Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms.

But back to Sibelius – and thus to Finland. Conductor Justus Thorau, born in Berlin in 1986, finalist and special prizewinner at the 2015 German Conductors' Competition, will present the composer's most famous orchestral work with Sibelius' Karelia Suite at the end of the concert program and, with its extremely colorful orchestral sound, will take you into the rough northern European landscape.

Sibelius‘ Violinkonzert entführt in die herbe Schönheit seiner finnischen Heimat mit Seen, Wäldern, weiten Ebenen und mythischen Wesen. Die Virtuosität, mit der das Konzert diese Klangbilder malt, fordert dem Solisten alles ab. Der deutsch-spanisch-malaysische Geiger Elias David Moncado ist Preisträger zahlreicher Violinwettbewerbe und einer der einfühlsamsten Interpreten seiner Generation. Wenn nicht ihm, dann wird es wohl kaum jemandem gelingen, den Bogen zwischen Fingerfertigkeit und emotionalem Ausdruck zu spannen.

Griegs Norwegische Tänze sind zwar nicht so oft in der Werbung vertreten wie seine „Morgenstimmung“ aus der Peer Gynt Suite, aber sie sind sicher die schönsten, stimmungsvollsten und authentischsten Werbemelodien Norwegens. Sie stehen als solche auch in bester Tradition: Die Komposition Griegs – ursprünglich für Klavier solo – war die Antwort des Norwegers auf die rasend erfolgreichen Slawischen Tänze Antonín Dvořáks und die Ungarischen Tänze von Johannes Brahms.

Doch zurück zu Sibelius – und somit nach Finnland. Der 1986 in Berlin geborene Dirigent Justus Thorau, Finalist und Sonderpreisträger beim Deutschen Dirigentenwettbewerb 2015, präsentiert mit Sibelius’ Karelia-Suite zum Abschluss des Konzertprogramms das berühmteste Orchesterwerk des Komponisten und entführt mit seinem äußerst farbigen Orchesterklang in die raue nordeuropäische Landschaft.
