The art of lyrical singing has had its Italian expression since the 17th century: “Bel Canto”. More than a technique at the beginning of the 19th century, it became a style: especially in opera, and developed beyond Italy and the lyrical genre. Naturally centered on the melody, any musician, any composer admires this musical art in the service of the interior "drama", of the expression of the feelings, such as wanted by the rise of Romanticism. Thus the French Hérold or the Swiss Niedermeyer try to fit into this tradition. Even more strikingly, the Irishman John Field was inspired by Bel Canto to construct a form, the Nocturne, more than twenty years before Chopin. But above all he develops thanks to Bel Canto a new language, a new technique, for his instrument the pianoforte: in the 19th century, it became the instrument for the expression of the intimate, of interior dramas, beyond the words of opera. And Field, thanks in particular to Bel Canto, was undoubtedly the herald.

L’art du chant lyrique a son expression italienne depuis le XVIIe siècle : le « Bel Canto ». Plus qu’une technique au début du XIXe siècle, il devient un style : à l’opéra surtout, et se développe par-delà l’Italie et le genre lyrique. Naturellement centré sur la mélodie, tout musicien, tout compositeur admire cet art musical au service du « drame » intérieur, de l’expression des sentiments, telle que voulue par l’essor du Romantisme. Ainsi le français Hérold ou le suisse Niedermeyer tentent-ils de s’inscrire dans cette tradition. Plus frappant encore, l’Irlandais John Field s’inspire du Bel Canto pour construire une forme, le Nocturne, plus de vingt années avant Chopin. Mais surtout il développe grâce au Bel Canto un nouveau langage, une nouvelle technique, pour son instrument le pianoforte : celui-ci devient au XIXe siècle l’instrument de l’expression de l’intime, des drames intérieurs, hors les mots de l’opéra. Et Field, grâce notamment au Bel Canto, en a été sans doute le héraut.
