Edward Elgar kon geen betere titel kiezen voor zijn Meditation, een orkestrale prelude tot zijn grote koorwerk The Light of Life. Het korte orkeststuk is ook een mooie inleiding op de twee romantische meesterwerken op het programma. Met het Derde pianoconcerto van Sergej Rachmaninov kiest de Armeens-Amerikaanse klaviervirtuoos Sergej Babajan voor een van de moeilijkste pianowerken uit de muziekgeschiedenis. Het concerto schittert dankzij de meeslepende melodieën en rijke melodieën waar Rachmaninov zich meester in toont. De mineurtoonaard en de algemene atmosfeer verraden echter zijn fascinatie voor de dood. Ook Camille Saint-Saëns geeft in zijn Derde symfonie uitdrukking aan zijn angst voor het einde der tijden: hij verweeft het Dies Irae-motief doorheen de hele symfonie. Haar bijnaam de Orgelsymfonie dankt ze aan het magistrale instrument dat kleur en grandeur geeft aan de tweede beweging en de onvergetelijke finale, waarin orgel en orkest alle registers opentrekken: een grootse emotionele ervaring die je niet mag missen.

This brief orchestral piece serves as a captivating introduction to the two romantic masterpieces on the program. Armenian-American piano virtuoso Sergej Babajan tackles one of the most challenging piano works in musical history with Sergei Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto. The concerto shines with its rich melodies and harmonies, showcasing Rachmaninoff's mastery. Despite its brilliance, the concerto's minor key and overall atmosphere reveal the composer's fascination with mortality. Similarly, Camille Saint-Saëns expresses his fear of the end times in his Third Symphony, weaving the Dies Irae motif throughout the entire composition.
