The cycle of 24 songs for baritone and piano, which Schubert composed shortly before his death, begins with the verses "Fremd bin ich eingezogen / Fremd zieh' ich wieder aus". To this day, this work is one of the most poignant artistic manifestations of outsiderness and loneliness. With its profound combination of folksong-like simplicity and pathos, it contains the entire expressive fullness of Romantic poetry and music.
