Take a more detailed look into the themes and inspirations behind this brand new multimedia opera adaptation of Egyptian writer Naawal El Saadawi's seminal novel. Insights: Woman at Point Zero

Inspired by Egyptian writer and feminist Nawal El Saadawi’s groundbreaking novel, Woman at
Point Zero is the story of two women that unfolds over one day. Fatma is an activist imprisoned
for manslaughter and Sama a documentary filmmaker. They share memories, experiences and
secrets – moving from mistrust to curiosity, and finally friendship.
From this universal story of abuse and emancipation, composer Bushra El-Turk, director Laila
Soliman, writer Stacy Hardy and scenographer and film designer Bissane Al Charif create a
multimedia opera. Conducted by Kanako Abe, the music blends Western and Eastern traditions,
performed on a unique mix of folk instruments.
