Agata Zubel należy do najwybitniejszych śpiewaczek naszych czasów. Razem z grającą pod dyrekcją Ernsta Kovacica NFM Orkiestrą Leopoldinum artystka przedstawi cztery cykle pieśni. Dwa z nich to popularne i często wykonywane dzieła autorstwa Gustava Mahlera. Dwa pozostałe to dzieła jego żony, Almy. Są to znakomite, choć rzadko wykonywane kompozycje.

Cykl Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, czyli Pieśni wędrownego czeladnika, ukończony został przez Mahlera w roku 1885. Impulsem do jego napisania było nieodwzajemnione uczucie do śpiewaczki Johanny Richter, którą artysta poznał w Kassel, gdzie był dyrygentem miejscowego teatru operowego. Cztery pieśni, cechujące się wielką siłą ekspresji i śpiewnością melodii, należą do najczęściej wykonywanych dzieł tego kompozytora. Mahler był do nich tak bardzo przywiązany, że dwie z nich wykorzystał jako materiał tematyczny powstającej w tym samym czasie I Symfonii. Rückert-Lieder to pięć przepełnionych melancholią pieśni napisanych, jak sam tytuł wskazuje, do tekstów romantycznego niemieckiego poety Friedricha Rückerta. Największą popularność spośród nich zyskała Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (Jestem stracony dla świata), wykorzystana w filmie Jima Jarmuscha Kawa i papierosy.

Młodsza od Gustava o dziewiętnaście lat Alma także miała ambicje kompozytorskie. Niestety, na przeszkodzie rozwojowi jej talentu stanęło małżeństwo z Mahlerem. Kategorycznie zakazał on małżonce zajmowania się kompozycją, a ta ugięła się pod tym żądaniem, do pewnego momentu karnie wypełniając rolę przykładnej gospodyni. Dopiero głęboki kryzys w ich związku sprawił, że artysta zwrócił uwagę na twórczość Almy i postarał się nawet o publikację jej pieśni. Podczas koncertu w wykonaniu Agaty Zubel usłyszymy dwa zbiory – wydane w 1910 roku Fünf Lieder oraz Vier Lieder, opublikowane w 1915 roku. Ta pełna ekspresji, przesycona dekadenckim nastrojem muzyka dobitnie świadczy o wielkim talencie autorki, który, niestety, nie miał możliwości pełnego rozwinięcia się.

Agata Zubel is one of the greatest singers of our times. Together with the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra conducted by Ernst Kovacic, the artist will present four cycles of songs. Two of them are popular and frequently performed works by Gustav Mahler. The other two are works by his wife, Alma. These are excellent, though rarely performed compositions.

The cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen , or Songs of a Wandering Journeyman , was completed by Mahler in 1885. The impulse to write it was his unrequited feeling for the singer Johanna Richter, whom the artist met in Kassel, where he was the conductor of the local opera house. Four songs, characterized by great power of expression and melodious melodies, are among the composer's most frequently performed works. Mahler was so attached to them that he used two of them as thematic material for the First Symphony, which he was writing at the same time. Rückert-Lieder are five songs filled with melancholy written, as the title suggests, to texts by the romantic German poet Friedrich Rückert. It gained the most popularity among themIch bin der Welt abhanden gekomme n ( I am lost to the world ), featured in the Jim Jarmusch film Coffee and Cigarettes .

Alma, nineteen years younger than Gustav, also had compositional ambitions. Unfortunately, her marriage to Mahler prevented the development of her talent. He categorically forbade his wife to deal with the composition, and she bowed to this demand, up to a certain point, disciplinedly fulfilling the role of an exemplary housewife. Only a deep crisis in their relationship made the artist pay attention to Alma's work and even tried to publish her songs. During the concert, performed by Agata Zubel, we will hear two collections - Fünf Lieder published in 1910 and Vier Lieder published in 1915. This expressive, decadent music is a clear proof of the author's great talent, which, unfortunately, did not have the opportunity to fully develop.
