German-American bass, Malte Roesner, gathered his first solo experiences as a boy soprano. He studied both musicology and vocal performance, and continued his education in postgraduate studies in art song interpretation with Irwin Gage. Several years ago he switched to bass repertoire, having previously sung as a baritone.

Malte Roesner is an alumnus of the German National Academic Foundation and the Richard Wagner Bursary Fund.

In October of 2022, he will sing the role of the rebel leader Pablo in the world premiere of Brian Wilbur Grundstrom's For Whom the Bell Tolls, the first opera based on a Hemingway novel, co-produced by the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia and the Rome Symphony Orchestra in Georgia. Having had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual recording of a scene from the opera was made with the Orquestra Sinfônica Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro (OSTNCS) in Brasilia. This recording has now been nominated for Best Filmed Stage Play at RioWebfest 2021 and has won two awards at the TIVA Peer Awards in Washington, D.C., including for Music - Original Song.

Mr. Roesner was scheduled to return to West Edge Opera in the San Francisco Bay Area in the summer of 2020, where he would have sung Nerbulone in a production of Eliogabalo by Francesco Cavalli. Due to the pandemic, the production had to be postponed to 2021, but he was also unable to participate then due to travel restrictions. 

In 2019, Malte Roesner made his Festival Opera debut in Walnut Creek, CA, as Elder Ott in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah.

In 2018, he sang the Devil in Jaromir Weinberger's Schwanda, the Bagpiper at Stadttheater Giessen, and appeared in Verdi's Rigoletto at both Staatstheater Braunschweig and Theater Osnabrück. He also sang the world premiere of Clint Borzoni's song cycle The Hidden Singer for bass voice and string quartet with Musica Marin in San Francisco.

In the summer of 2017, he made his critically acclaimed North American debut in the West Edge Opera production of Vicente Martin y Soler's L'arbore di Diana and with a recital of art songs from the Vienna Classic that he had unearthed from manuscripts in the Austrian National Library. In December 2017, he returned to the San Francisco Bay Area for another recital, this time for Opera Parallèle and the Legion of Honor.

From 2005 to 2016 Malte Roesner was a member of the ensemble of the Staatstheater Braunschweig, where he embodied more than fifty roles, including two that were broadcast on national radio and later released on CD.

In addition to the classical repertoire, he has participated in many rediscoveries and world premieres, including the opening production of the 14th Munich Biennale for New Music Theater.

In the productions of Jake Heggie's For a Look or a Touch and Jonathan Dove's Mansfield Park, Mr. Roesner not only participated in the male lead role, but also wrote the official German translations.

His portrayal of Joe Gillis in the musical Sunset Boulevard, his first major musical role, was highly praised by the German press. In 2018, he returned to the piece in a new role. He now sang Max von Mayerling at the Staatstheater Cottbus. He reprised this role in 2019 at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven.

Malte Roesner is an avid concert and lieder singer and has sung a wide repertoire from Renaissance music to world premieres.

Der deutsch-amerikanische Bass Malte Roesner hatte seine ersten solistischen Auftritte als Knabensopran. Er studierte sowohl Musikwissenschaften als auch Operngesang und bildete sich im Aufbaustudium Liedinterpretation mit Irwin Gage weiter. Vor einigen Jahren wechselte er ins Bassrepertoire, nachdem er zuvor als Bariton gesungen hatte.

Malte Roesner ist Alumnus der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes und des Richard-Wagner-Stipendienfonds.

Im Oktober 2022 wird er die Rolle des Rebellenführers Pablo in der Uraufführung von Brian Wilbur Grundstroms For Whom the Bell Tolls, der ersten auf einem Hemingway-Roman basierenden Oper, singen, welche vom Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia und dem Rome Symphony Orchestra in Georgia koproduziert wird. Da die Produktion wegen der COVID-19-Pandemie verschoben werden musste, wurde eine virtuelle Aufnahme einer Szene aus der Oper mit dem Orquestra Sinfônica Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro (OSTNCS) in Brasilia gemacht. Diese Aufnahme wurde nun beim RioWebfest 2021 als bestes gefilmtes Bühnenstück nominiert und hat bei den TIVA Peer Awards in Washington, D.C., zwei Preise gewonnen, darunter für Musik – Originalsong.
