Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? - Des Knaben Wunderhorn - Mahler

‘Who thought up this little song?’ In this whimsical ballad the singer looks up the hill towards the innkeeper’s house where the daughter gazes out of the window. Who thought up the song? ‘The geese brought it over the water. If you can’t sing it, they’ll whistle it for you.

‘Pwy biau y gân fach hon?’ Yn y faled fympwyol hon mae’r canwr yn edrych i fyny’r bryn tuag at dy’r tafarnwr lle mae ei ferch yn syllu drwy’r ffenestr. Pwy biau y gân? ‘Daeth y gwyddau â hi dros y dwr. Os na allant ei chanu, ei chwibanu a wnânt.’

Con qué la lavaré? - Cuatros madrigales amatorios No 1 - Rodrigo

With what shall I bathe the skin of my face, asks the poet. Wives and mothers can wash in lemon water, but the poet can only bathe in tears of pain and sorrow. The text is by an unknown author, from Juan Vasque’s 16th century anthology.

Draußen in Sievering - Die Tänzerin Fanny Elssler - Johann Strauss II

In ‘Outside in Sievering’, a girl meets her sweetheart to go out for the evening. When he asks where in Vienna she wants to go on this lovely spring evening, she says that the lilacs are in bloom in Sievering. They’ll go to a lovely little pub and drink wine. She is sure that something will happen tonight. The operetta this comes from tells the story of the famous Austrian dancer, Fanny Elssler.

Sea moods - Mildred Lund Tyson

Mildred Lund Tyson was an American musician working in the 20th century. She was a singer and choral conductor and many of her compositions are for voice or chorus and piano. This song is to a text by Kenneth G Benham and is dedicated to Kirsten Flagstad. The singer looks to the calm sea to bring comfort and peace. But his soul will triumph over adversity, as do the rocks in the sea.

Prometheus - Wolf

In Goethe’s great poem, Prometheus challenges Zeus: he can fill the heavens with clouds, and strike his thunderbolts ‘like a boy beheading thistles’ at oaks and mountains, but must leave Prometheus’s world alone. The gods are wretched, and would starve if children and beggars did not nourish them. Prometheus will form men in his own image, and teach them to ignore the gods.

Like the wind that meets the lotus - Kim Joo-Won

This is a song about saying goodbye, but also knowing that goodbye is not forever. It is not just a story of lovers parting, but is also related to reincarnation. The lotus is a Buddhist symbol of many things including rebirth, Nirvana and transmigration.

Die Liebende schreibt - Op 86 - Mendelssohn

The lovers are separated, but she thinks of him all the time. One look, one kiss – and she thinks constantly of the short time they were together. Goethe’s poem ‘The beloved writes‘ was written when the 57 year old was infatuated with an 18 year old girl.

In ‘The lilacs that bloomed last year‘, the poet muses that the blossoms will come again this year. In the middle of last year’s show of pink and white, he remembers that he had hoped for something from his beloved. He begs her not to push away his love. The text is by the Symbolist poet, Francis Jammes.

The title of this Welsh folksong means ‘lullaby‘. A mother sings to her baby, enfolded in her arms, smiling in sleep. She will make sure that nothing will harm her child.

A mother speaks proudly of her child. His golden hair, blue eyes, sweet and happy dispositiion make him second to none. She wouldn’t give him up for all the money in the world. The text is by Gottfried August Bürger.

The poem, by Maurice Fombeure, paints a picture of a small village in France. The lord of the manor has died and is buried in the churchyard. Tomorrow, there will be a party with music, drink and dancing, to welcome springtime.

‘The blue hill’ is a nostalgic song of the pain of being far away from home. The hill is a landmark which can be seen from afar and represents coming home for the Malagasy person. Home is not only where the heart is, but it is also where friends and family are. Many people have to go away, but should try and return as often as possible. Seeing loved ones relieves the sorrow of being so far away.

The poet is full of melancholy under the starry skies, as he remembers his dead lover. He hears her soul in the dreamy forest; he stands by their fountain and sees her blue eyes in the water and the stars. The poem is by Théodore de Banville.

In ‘The sailor’s farewell’, he addresses his beloved, saying he was never good enough for her. While she reclines on her bearskin rug, he will be facing the terrors of storms at sea. One day, she may hear a mermaid singing – perhaps that will be his wife, as he lies under the sea.

Gretchen am Spinnrade - D118 - Schubert

Gretchen sits at her spinning wheel, sad because she has been abandoned by Faust. She has no peace, and her heart is heavy. She searches for Faust all the time, looking out for his walk, his smile, and thinking of his kisses. This is one of several settings Schubert made of scenes from Goethe’s Faust.

This song is written in the Xhosa language, mainly prevalent in the Eastern Cape area of South Africa. The title means ‘My love‘. The singer thinks about the past, desolate because they are no longer with the one they love. Why did you leave, the singer says: please come back to me.

Die Lorelei - S273 - Liszt

Many composers have set the famous poem by Heine, which tells the story of the fabled Lorelei, a siren connected with the rock on the Rhine whose currents have caused many boat accidents. In the poem, a fair maiden sits on the mountain top, singing as she combs her golden hair. The boatman is transfixed by her, not seeing the treacherous rocks which could send him to his death.

Betty Jackson King was an American composer, singer, pianist, conductor and teacher. She mostly wrote choral and vocal music, including many settings of spirituals, such as this one.
