Oratorio / Orchestral
When Henryk Górecke's 3rd Symphony (1933 - 2010), " Symphony of Mourning Songs" was first performed in 1977 at a festival in Royane, France, no one noticed this remarkable work. The critics accepted the symphony very coldly and even described it as tonal and thus regressive. In 1993, however, a CD with a recording of this work with the American soprano Dawn Upshaw under the baton of David Zinman appeared in the ranking of the most played hits in Great Britain. In the US, it remained at the top of the classical music charts for 38 weeks and sold a total of more than a million CDs. What caused this unprecedented huge interest in this modern work of classical music? It is its simplicity and at the same time spiritual depth, extraordinary warmth and light that radiates from this composition, despite the sadness of the theme of the songs. In the first part Górecki set to music the mourning of Mary over her son, coming from a 15th century monastery, in the second part an inscription from the Gestapo cell in Zakopane and in the third Silesian a folk song from the Polish uprisings, describing the mother's deep grief over her son. Peter Valentovič will study Henryk Górecký's 3rd Symphony with the successful Slovak soprano Slávka Zámečníková and the ŠDKE Opera Orchestra. Slávka Zámečníková is a soloist at the Vienna State Opera, where, among other things, she played the title role in Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppey at the end of last season and is one of our best singers of the younger generation.
