She really existed: the actress Adrienne Lecouvreur, undisputed star of the Comédie Française from 1717, then 23 years young. More than 1,000 people from all walks of life cheered her on every evening. When she suddenly died 13 years later, entangled in a passionate relationship with Moritz von Sachsen, dramatic rumors soon began to circulate about her death: the jealous Princess von Bouillon had poisoned her rival... Neither theatrical author Eugène Scribe nor Sarah Bernhardt could relate to this colportage drama , which Adrienne of the theatrical premiere in 1849, nor Francesco Cilèa elude. They skilfully combined historical and biographical facts with fabricated rumors to create a tense, complicated love triangle. Francesco Cilèa, a celebrated contemporary of Puccini, seems to anticipate the early film music in places in the elegant, melodic and colorful score with expressive, supple vocal parts. In 1902, with Enrico Caruso in the role of Maurizio, "Adriana Lecouvreur" celebrated its brilliant world premiere at La Scala in Milan.

Director and set designer Gianluca Falaschi places the look behind the scenes and into the emotional world of a great diva at the fragile zenith of her popularity in the art and dream world of theater in the style of Hollywood's golden era, in which reality and illusion, people and their roles penetrate: What is reality, what is art? What remains when the limelight goes out?

Geschickt verbanden sie historische und biografische Fakten mit erfundenen Gerüchten zu einer spannungsgeladenen, verwickelten Dreiecksgeschichte. Francesco Cilèa, seinerzeit gefeierter Zeitgenosse Puccinis, scheint in der eleganten, melodien- wie farbenreichen Partitur mit ausdrucksvoll-geschmeidigen Gesangspartien stellenweise bereits die frühe Filmmusik vorwegzunehmen. 1902, mit Enrico Caruso in der Rolle des Maurizio, feierte „Adriana Lecouvreur“ an der Mailänder Scala ihre fulminante Weltpremiere.
