In this breathtaking political thriller, Handel's second composition after a Nero subject in his sixth opera, everything initially seems clear on the stage of power: The Roman Emperor Claudius is said to have drowned on the return trip from his successful campaign against Britain. His wife Agrippina sees the moment for Nerone, their son from their first marriage, to ascend the throne. But the librettist - presumably Vincenzo Grimani, among other things cardinal and imperial ambassador to the Vatican - lets his characters indulge in such breathtaking turning points and tricks around the vacant throne that in the end the question is almost whether there are winners or losers and also from  lieto finecan still be talked about. Director Barrie Kosky sums it up: "This opera shows what makes the best operas: a combination of eroticism and power."
