Au moment de l’inauguration du Canal de Suez, le khédive égyptien désirant marquer les fêtes par un important spectacle d’opéra s’adressa à Verdi pour qu’il compose l’œuvre qui ouvrirait l’Opéra du Caire bâti pour la circonstance. C’est le célèbre égyptologue Mariette qui avait imaginé l’intrigue et veillé à produire un spectacle conforme aux connaissances qu’il avait de l’Antiquité. Pour des raisons matérielles, la création d’Aida avait été reportée. Ce fut fin 1871 que l’oeuvre triompha pour la première fois au Caire, représentation suivie rapidement par une création à La Scala de Milan.

Le rôle d’Aida, très exigeant, avait été écrit pour la grande Teresa Stolz qui en assura la première italienne. Dans l’immense partition, les thèmes verdiens convergent en une dramaturgie exceptionnelle. La patrie, l’autorité paternelle, la trahison, la fidélité, l’amour et la mort s’associent à un chant exceptionnel soutenu par un chœur somptueux et un orchestre dont le symphonisme illustre le grandiose spectacle … jusqu’à l’usage des fameuses trompettes thébaines de forme antique qui font encore la célébrité d’Aida.

At the time of the inauguration of the Suez Canal , the Egyptian khedive wishing to mark the holidays with an important opera performance contacted Verdi to compose the work that would open the Cairo Opera House built for the occasion. It was the famous Egyptologist Mariette who had imagined the plot and made sure to produce a show in keeping with the knowledge he had of Antiquity. For material reasons, the creation of Aida had been postponed. It was at the end of 1871 that the work triumphed for the first time in Cairo, a performance quickly followed by a premiere at La Scala in Milan .

The role of Aida, very demanding, had been written for the great Teresa Stolz who provided the Italian premiere. In the immense score, the Verdian themes converge in an exceptional dramaturgy. The homeland, paternal authority, betrayal, fidelity, love and death are associated with an exceptional song supported by a sumptuous choir and an orchestra whose symphony illustrates the grandiose spectacle... until the use of famous ancient shaped Theban trumpets which still make Aida famous .
