In his war with the conquerors, Otumbo and his warriors have captured Álvaro, the Spanish governor. They are about to execute him when Zamoro appears. He is the leader of his tribe and he had been left for dead, but he has managed to barely survive the harsh torments that Álvaro's son, Guzmán, had inflicted on him. Despite this, he shows his magnanimity and allows the governor to go unscathed. Otumbo reports that Zamoro's fiancee, Alzira, has been taken prisoner in Lima along with her father, Ataliba. Zamoro leaves with the intention of being able to rescue them and take revenge on the Spanish.

 

In Lima, Álvaro entrusts the position of governor to his own son, Guzmán, who wants to make peace with the Incas and hopes to seal the pact by marrying Alzira, whom he loves. But Alzira's heart still beats only for Zamoro, and not even her father can convince her to change her mind. Meanwhile, Zamoro has managed to enter the palace, but the lovers' joyful reunion is interrupted by Guzmán, who takes Zamoro prisoner and, in doing so, violates the terms of the peace treaty that had been agreed upon. On his knees, Álvaro implores his own son to save the life of the Inca, to whom he owes his life, but Guzmán is undaunted. Only when he is informed that Inca troops are approaching the city does he decide to free Zamoro and atone for his father's guilt.

 

The Spanish have decimated the Inca army and Zamoro will be burned at dawn. Alzira pleads for her life to be spared, and Guzmán tells her that if she agrees to marry him, Zamoro will be released from her. Saddened, Alzira reluctantly accepts her offer. Meanwhile, Otumbo has bribed the prison guards, allowing Zamoro to escape, but when he learns that Alzira and Guzmán are getting married, he immediately returns to Lima, where, disguised in a Spanish uniform, he mixes with the guests. to the wedding. He manages to reach Guzmán and stabs him in the chest. As he lies dying, Guzmán remembers his Christian faith and not only forgives Zamoro, but also favors his union with Alzira. With the last of his strength, he implores Álvaro to give him his blessing and, immediately afterwards, he dies.
