Bach's Christmas Oratorio is one of his most famous and most frequently performed church works. The Christmas oratorio is written as six different cantatas for six consecutive Sundays during the Christmas season. At this year's concerts, the first three cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio will be performed, namely the cantatas that tell the story of Jesus' birth. The story thus begins with the Gospel, which we know from Christmas Eve, when Joseph and the pregnant Mary go to Bethlehem, and where she gives birth to her child at night and names him Jesus. Bach wrote his Christmas Oratorio as part of a grand plan to make music for all the texts of the church year, not just in a single church year, but over a number of years. He wrote a total of more than 300 cantatas, of which 209 exist today.

Bachs Juleoratorium er et af hans mest berømte og oftest opførte kirkelige værker. Juleoratoriet er skrevet som seks forskellige kantater til seks sammenhængende søndage i juletiden. Ved dette års koncerter opføres de tre første kantater af Juleoratoriet, nemlig de kantater, som fortæller historien om Jesu fødsel. Fortællingen begynder altså med evangeliet, som vi kender fra juleaften, hvor Josef og den gravide Maria drager til Betlehem, og hvor hun om natten føder sit barn og kalder ham Jesus. Bach skrev sit Juleoratorium som en del af en storslået plan om at lave musik til alle teksterne i kirkeåret, ikke bare i et enkelt kirkeår, men igennem en årrække. Han skrev i alt mere end 300 kantater, hvoraf 209 eksisterer i dag.
