Revolutionäre Botschafter – In Europa herrschten zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts ständige Revolutionskriege und Neuordnungsversuche vor, was sich auch kulturell widerspiegelte: Politisch denkende Künstler wie Ludwig van Beethoven schufen ihre Werke, um Botschaften zu senden. Beethovens Verehrung galt dem revoltierenden Napoleon, weswegen er seiner 1802/1803 komponierten 3. Symphonie ursprünglich den Titel „Buonaparte“ verlieh. Bitter enttäuscht jedoch, dass Napoleon sich 1804 selbst zum Kaiser krönte, nahm Beethoven die Widmung zurück und notierte stattdessen schlicht: „Sinfonia Eroica“ – „Heroische Symphonie“.

Länger währte Beethovens Bewunderung für Luigi Cherubini, von dessen Kompositionen er sich „entzückt“ zeigte: „Ich nehme größeren Anteil daran als an meinen eigenen. Kurz, ich ehre und liebe Sie“, schrieb er dem Italiener in Paris. Vor allem für Cherubinis spektakuläres Requiem c-Moll war Beethoven voll des Lobes und erbat sich eine Aufführung für seine eigene Beerdigung. Wie Beethovens „Eroica“ steht es im revolutionären Kontext, wenn auch aus entgegengesetzter Richtung: 1816 war es im Gedenken an die Enthauptung König Ludwig XVI. durch Revolutionäre in Auftrag gegeben worden. Dass der erzrevolutionäre Beethoven gut zehn Jahre später mit diesem Werk ebenfalls geehrt wurde, wirkt wie eine ironische Anekdote der Geschichtsschreibung.

Revolutionary ambassadors – At the beginning of the 19th century, constant revolutionary wars and attempts at reorganization prevailed in Europe, which was also reflected culturally: Politically minded artists such as Ludwig van Beethoven created their works to send messages. Beethoven's admiration was for the revolting Napoleon, which is why he originally gave the title "Buonaparte" to his 3rd symphony, composed in 1802/1803. However, bitterly disappointed that Napoleon crowned himself Emperor in 1804, Beethoven took back the dedication and instead simply wrote: "Sinfonia Eroica" - "Heroic Symphony".

Beethoven's admiration for Luigi Cherubini lasted longer, and he was "enchanted" by his compositions: "I take a greater interest in them than in my own. In short, I honor and love you,” he wrote to the Italian in Paris. Beethoven was particularly full of praise for Cherubini's spectacular Requiem in C minor and requested a performance for his own funeral. Like Beethoven's "Eroica" it stands in a revolutionary context, albeit from the opposite direction: in 1816 it was written to commemorate the beheading of King Louis XVI. commissioned by revolutionaries. The fact that the arch-revolutionary Beethoven was also honored with this work a good ten years later seems like an ironic anecdote from historiography.
