On June 1, 1931, the Samara Opera House (then called the Middle Volga Regional Opera) opened its first season with the opera Boris Godunov - it was a production by director Iosif Lapitsky and conductor Anton Eichenwald. After 8 decades, in the 81st season, the theater again turned to Mussorgsky's opera, focusing on the drama of a complex and controversial historical character - Tsar Boris (1552-1605, ruled from 1598).

In the production, pictures of Russian history four centuries ago come to life, in many ways consonant with modernity. The scenes of the opera follow one another, like the pages of the manuscript of the chronicler Pimen being turned over, and line up in a dynamic sequence from the popular election of the king to his tragic, painful death in the finale. The performance has become an inquisitive appeal of Russia of the 21st century to the past of its country.

In addition to the inaugural production of 1931, SATOB addressed Boris Godunov as early as 1937 (director Ivan Prostorov, conductor Vladimir Shefer), 1950 (director Yuri Loran, conductor Heinrich Riesman) and 1961 (directors Anatoly Picard and Vladimir Shakhrai, conductor Savely Bergolts) years. The current production is the fifth in the theater's history.

The performance is attended by students of the Children's Experimental Central Choir School-ten-year-old and artists of the modern dance theater of Elvira Pervova "Scream".
