Brahms’ A German Requiem is a radiant and uplifting musical event brought to life by the musicians of the symphony, guest soloists Emma Johnson and Micah Schroeder and the voices of the Ablaze VAE. This cornerstone of choral music explores the transient nature of life and the anxiety of loss, all while providing comfort to the living.

Gordon Gerrard, conductor
Conductor Gordon Gerrard is among the exciting new generation of music directors demonstrating new visions for orchestral leadership in Canada. Currently in his sixth season leading the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Gordon has distinguished himself as a leader in innovative and inclusionary programming. Trained first as a pianist and subsequently as a specialist in operatic repertoire, he brings a fresh perspective to the podium that endears him to audiences and musicians alike. After an international search, Gordon was appointed Music Director of the Regina Symphony Orchestra where he has taken bold steps reimagining the orchestra’s programming, including its Forward Currents Festival dedicated to social change and community engagement.

He has held the posts of Associate Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of Calgary Opera. He has returned to Calgary Opera to lead productions of La Bohème, Roméo et Juliette, Die Fledermaus, Lakmé and the Canadian premiere of Mark Adamo’s Little Women, which was recorded for national broadcast on CBC’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera. Gordon made his debut with Edmonton Opera leading the western Canadian premiere of Rossini’s Le Comte Ory.

Gordon has made appearances with many of Canada’s leading orchestras, including Toronto, Québec, Kitchener-Waterloo and Victoria. He has worked regularly with the National Ballet of Canada, and in 2016, he made his European debut at Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsburg in Germany.

Emma Johnson, soprano


Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, soprano Emma Johnson obtained her Master of Music from the University of Manitoba under the tutelage of Monica Huisman. As a featured soloist with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, and Regina Philharmonic Chorus, Emma has established herself as a versatile performer in opera, oratorio, and art song repertoire.

With so many firsts of her musical career having taken place in the Saskatchewan arts community, Emma is thrilled to make her hometown debut with the Regina Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to her graduate degree, Emma holds a Bachelor of Voice Performance from the University of Toronto where she studied under Mary Morrison O.C., and Elizabeth McDonald.

Micah Schroeder, baritone


Canadian-American baritone Micah Schroeder, praised for his “smooth as glass lyrical contours” (The National Post), has performed across North America and in Europe. A recent graduate of the opera studio of Opéra de Lyon, the Vancouver Opera Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program and the Opera Idaho Young Artist Program, Schroeder is a champion of contemporary repertoire and recently curated and created the documentary film DENKMAL as an Artist-in-Residence for Pacific Opera Victoria. In the coming season Schroeder will create the role of Quinn in the world premiere of Nicole Lizee's RUR: A Torrent of Light with Tapestry Opera in Toronto.Schroeder received a Bachelor and Master of Music degree from the University of British Columbia and an Artist Diploma in Opera from the University of Toronto.

Ablaze Vocal Arts Ensemble, chorus
Ablaze Vocal Arts Ensemble is a non-auditioned community-based group which rehearses once a week in Regina, SK. Since Ablaze VAE is community ensemble, there is a heavy emphasis on learning musicianship skills within the context of the choral rehearsal. The pace of Ablaze VAE is a little more relaxed than that of Ignite Chamber Choir; Ablaze VAE is suitable for singers of all experience and ability levels. While the ability to read music is an advantage, music literacy skills are not required to participate in Ablaze VAE.

Dorianna Holowachuk, chorus artistic director
Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Dorianna Holowachuk is the founder and Artistic Director of Ablaze Vocal Arts Ensemble Inc. Throughout her career, she has conducted choirs of all ages and abilities. In her over 20 years of choral singing experience, Dorianna has had the pleasure of singing in numerous choirs, including the 2010 and 2014 National Youth Choir of Canada. Dorianna finds joy in choral projects that encourage community building, and makes a deliberate effort to program works based on their artistic whole; drawing inspiration equally from the poetic text and the musical language. Dorianna is an active member of Regina’s music community as a singer, teacher, choral conductor, and clinician. She is the Director of Music at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral where she enjoys fostering community through her work in the music ministry. Dorianna holds a Master of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Regina.
