Ligeti and Britten: two major and antithetical figures in many respects of 20th century musical modernity.
Rather than classifying these two composers into two distinct categories, Extended Mirrors reveals the intertwining of their works. A play of infinite influences, like a concentrate of hybridization of music deriving from a long history and from several continents, releases in some of these works a sometimes ecstatic aura at the inaugural climax of the Illuminations cycle. Rimbaud's words then resonate like a manifesto "I alone have the key to this wild parade". The influences of Kodály and of the folklore typical of the Hungarian period of Ligeti, the polyrhythmic Gamelan of the piano study Galamb borong, the extraordinary freedom of Britten, following his departure from England for America, in The Illuminations, the virtuoso versatility and mystery of his cello sonata which even looks to the Russian music of his friend Dmitri Shostakovich… All these timbres follow one another without ever attaching us to any century or place. As Ligeti writes, like an invitation to explore “a strange island that is not on any map”.

igeti et Britten : deux figures majeures et antithétiques à bien des égards de la modernité musicale du 20e siècle.
Plutôt que classer ces deux compositeurs dans deux catégories distinctes, Miroirs Étendus révèle les entremêlements de leurs œuvres. Un jeu d’influences infinies, comme un concentré d’hybridation de musiques dérivant d’une longue histoire et de plusieurs continents, libère dans certaines de ces œuvres une aura parfois extatique au climax inaugural du cycle des Illuminations. Les mots de Rimbaud résonnent alors comme un manifeste « J’ai seul la clef de cette parade sauvage ». Les influences de Kodály et du folklore typique de la période hongroise de Ligeti, le Gamelan polyrythmique de l’étude pour piano Galamb borong, l’extraordinaire liberté de Britten, suite à son départ de l’Angleterre pour l’Amérique, dans Les Illuminations, la versatilité virtuose et le mystère de sa sonate pour violoncelle qui regarde jusqu’à la musique russe de son ami Dmitri Chosta- kovitch… Tous ces timbres se succèdent sans jamais nous attacher à aucun siècle, à aucun lieu. Ainsi que l’écrit Ligeti, comme une invitation à explorer « une île étrange qui ne se trouve sur aucune carte ».
