Cabaret book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb It is Berlin in the early 1930s that lures American writer Cliff Bradshaw, like many artists of his generation. The city has a reputation as a metropolis where you can become famous. Nightclubs captivate their visitors and provide distraction from everyday life, which is often full of deprivation. Cliff ends up at the legendary Kit Kat Klub, where swing singer Sally takes the stage every night. She is the star of the club and seduces the guests with her voice and her charisma. Cliff is also blown away. When Sally is suddenly fired, she seeks refuge with him and the two become a couple. At first they seem to have a happy time, but there are already signs of an epochal historical upheaval. Berlin's inspiring international charm is fading and once friendly people are soon saluting in brown uniforms. The Nazi rise to power makes Cliff question life in Germany, while Sally holds on to her dream of becoming a star. John Kander wrote music inspired by the jazz and ragtime of the 1930s and, like a number revue, has a compere lead through the events. The musical and its songs have been world-famous since the eight Oscar-winning film adaptation starring Liza Minnelli in the role of Sally Bowles. At the DNT, one of the best-known directors in Germany will devote himself to this material, which is unfortunately again valid: After the Reichstag reenactment as part of the 2019 art festival, Nurkan Erpulat is working on his second production in Weimar with the drama and music theater ensemble and the Staatskapelle. Es ist das Berlin der frühen 1930er, das den amerikanischen Schriftsteller Cliff Bradshaw wie viele Künstler*innen seiner Generation anlockt. Der Stadt eilt der Ruf einer Metropole voraus, in der man berühmt werden kann. Nachtklubs ziehen ihre Besucher*innen in den Bann und spenden Zerstreuung vom oft entbehrungsreichen Alltag. Cliff landet im legendären Kit Kat Klub, in dem die Swing-Sängerin Sally jeden Abend auf der Bühne steht. Sie ist der Star des Klubs und verführt die Gäste mit ihrer Stimme und ihrer Ausstrahlung. Auch Cliff ist hin und weg. Als Sally plötzlich gefeuert wird, sucht sie Zuflucht bei ihm und die beiden werden ein Paar. Zunächst scheint ihnen eine glückliche Zeit beschert, doch es deuten sich bereits Zeichen eines epochalen historischen Umbruchs an. Der inspirierende internationale Charme Berlins verblasst und einst zugewandte Menschen salutieren bald in braunen Uniformen. Die Machtergreifung der Nazis lässt Cliff an einem Leben in Deutschland zweifeln, während Sally an ihrem Traum, ein Star zu werden, festhält.

John Kander hat eine von Jazz und Ragtime der 1930er Jahre inspirierte Musik geschrieben und lässt, gleich einer Nummernrevue, einen Conférencier durch das Geschehen führen. Das Musical und seine Songs sind spätestens seit der mit acht Oscars prämierten Verfilmung mit Liza Minnelli in der Rolle der Sally Bowles weltberühmt.

Am DNT wird sich einer der bekanntesten Regisseure in Deutschland diesem leider wieder gültigen Stoff widmen: Nach dem Reichstags-Reenactment im Rahmen des Kunstfests 2019 erarbeitet Nurkan Erpulat mit dem Schauspiel- und Musiktheaterensemble sowie der Staatskapelle seine zweite Inszenierung in Weimar.
