A loved one dies and the whole world falls apart - that's exactly what happens to the young Roman emperor Caligula. The death of his beloved sister Drusilla throws the young ruler off balance. What follows is an attempt to make the impossible possible and to impose a new logic on the world based on its own truth. This reads: "People die and are not happy". In order to repeatedly emphasize his conviction of this absurdity of life and to assert himself against it as a truly free and independent human being, Caligula sacrifices innumerable human lives in senseless arbitrariness. His hopeful reign lasted only four years from 37-41 AD, which culminated in tyranny and finally ended with his assassination.

Detlef Glanert wrote his opera, which premiered in 2006, based on the drama of the same name, Albert Camus. With the help of the music, Glanert looks directly into Caligula's unbalanced soul. The orchestra itself functions as a "body that has become music" through which we can look into Caligula's inner world and also perceive the other protagonists through his eyes and ears.

Dirk Schmeding began his theater career as an assistant director at DNT and is now returning to Weimar as an internationally sought-after director.
