The moment the freedom-loving Andalusian Carmen meets the conscientious Don José for the first time, tension is in the air. Carmen knows about her effect on men and in a short time manages to question Don José's life plan as Micaëla's future husband, including a military career. José helps Carmen escape prison after being stabbed by a knife and is demoted for it. He follows her smugglers' gang and loses her anyway to the successful bullfighter Escamillo. Trapped in his idea of ​​love, which is based on a claim to absoluteness, there is only one way out - the tragedy takes its course.

Since the appearance of Mérimée's novella “Carmen”, the main character, with her erotic charisma, her unconditional urge for freedom and her courage in the history of reception, has primarily served as a projection surface for the wishes and fears of others. The character Carmen can also be read as the general and timeless principle of love, which cannot be captured, but can disappear as unexpectedly and suddenly as it comes. The opera tells the story of a man who cannot reconcile this principle with his view of the world and who ultimately becomes a murderer.

The material was adapted many times, but none of it had such lasting success as the opera of the same name by Georges Bizet. He created a musical landscape that manifested the musical cliché of Spain with shimmering strings and clattering castanets. In-house director Jan Neumann, who staged “Midsummer Night's Dream”, “Wilhelm Tell” and most recently “Romeo and Juliet” in Weimar and is now devoting himself to an opera for the first time, tells “Carmen” as a timeless and timeless story about love, longing, transience and Disappointment.
