Pietro Mascagni's most famous work, Cavalleria Rusticana , is taken from the homonymous novel by Giovanni Verga and was soon considered a manifesto of "realism" in music. The first performance took place in Rome in 1890 and achieved immediate success, bringing the young Mascagni to fame. The libretto was written by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and by Guido Menasci in a hurry to allow the composer to present his work to the competition, which he later won, organized by the Milanese music publisher Sonzogno.

The episode takes place in a small town in Sicily on Easter day. Turiddu returns from military service and discovers that Lola, the girl he was in love with, has married Alfio, the carter. To console himself, the young man seduces Santuzza, but then neglects her and rejects her. This, she understands that Turiddu is still in love with Lola and, jealous, confesses to Alfio that her wife is not faithful to him. Finally, the two men will compete in a deadly duel that will see Turiddu defeated.
