Cherevichki rarely appeared on the Bolshoi stage. A striking example was the 1941 production conducted by Alexander Melik-Pashayev and directed by Ruben Simonov. The great singers performed there: Elena Kroeglikova, Elizaveta Antonova, Georgy Nelepp, Grigory Bolshakov, Alexei Ivanov, Maksim Mikhailov, Panteleimon Nortsov and many other glorified singers of the troupe of that time. Since then, Cherevichki has become a true rarity and nowadays the opera is only performed at the Chamber stage of the Bolshoi in Moscow.

In reality, the opera based on this plot was supposed to be written by Alexander Serov, an outstanding music critic and distinctly original composer. It was he who received an order from the Russian Musical Society in St Petersburg to create an opera based on Christmas Eve by Gogol. The libretto, as patron of the society, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna wished, was going to be written by famous poet Yakov Polonsky. However, in 1871 Serov suddenly died and work on the project was paused. Three years later, a competition on writing an opera based on the prepared libretto was announced. It was triumphally won by the young Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: the jury that had Rimsky-Korsakov, Eduard Napravnik and Anton Rubinstein on board, awarded him both first and second prizes.

The premiere of the opera Vakula the Smith, that was the name of the first author’s edition, was given at the Mariinsky Theatre on the 6th of December 1876 (new style) and was not received with great affection by the audience. The composer realised the imperfection of his creation too: “I bored the listener with an excessive number of details, the complexity of concord and absence of the ability to limit oneself in the orchestral parts. Besides, I did not allow the listener to have a rest: I fed them too much spicy musical food in one go… Vakula’s style is not operatic but symphonic or even chamber.”

Ten years later, Tchaikovsky realised the second edition: that how the opera Cherevichki was born (the new name was prompted by his brother Modest). The premiere was given in Moscow at the Bolshoi on the 31st of January 1887. Despite the stunning conduction of Tchaikovsky himself and favourable public reaction, it did not join the repertoire

«Черевички» на сцене Большого театра появлялись редко. Ярким эпизодом стала постановка 1941 года, осуществлённая дирижёром Александром Мелик-Пашаевым и режиссёром Рубеном Симоновым. В этом спектакле выступали выдающиеся исполнители: Елена Кругликова, Елизавета Антонова, Георгий Нэлепп, Григорий Большаков, Алексей Иванов, Максим Михайлов, Пантелеймон Норцов и многие другие прославленные артисты оперной труппы тех лет. С тех пор «Черевички» превратились в самый настоящий раритет, и ныне эта опера в Москве идёт только на Камерной сцене Большого театра.

На самом деле оперу на этот сюжет должен был написать Александр Николаевич Серов, выдающийся музыкальный критик и очень самобытный композитор. В 1870 году именно ему дирекция Петербургского русского музыкального общества заказала оперу по повести Гоголя «Ночь перед Рождеством». Либретто, по желанию великой княгини Елены Павловны, покровительницы Общества, должен был написать известный поэт Яков Полонский. Однако в 1871 году Серов внезапно скончался, и работа над сочинением была приостановлена. Через три года был объявлен конкурс на сочинение оперы по уже готовому либретто. В нём триумфально победил молодой Пётр Ильич Чайковский: жюри в составе Римского-Корсакова, Направника и Антона Рубинштейна присудило ему сразу и первую, и вторую премии.

Премьера оперы «Кузнец Вакула» — первая авторская редакция носила такое название — состоялась на сцене Мариинского театра 6 декабря 1876 года (по новому стилю) и большим зрительским успехом не сопровождалась. Композитор и сам осознавал несовершенство своего сочинения: «Я утомлял слушателя излишним обилием деталей, сложностью гармонии и отсутствием чувства меры в оркестровых эпизодах. Кроме того, я не умел дать отдохнуть слушателю: я давал ему сразу слишком много пряной музыкальной пищи... Стиль Вакулы не оперный, а симфонический и даже камерный».

Спустя десять лет Чайковский осуществил вторую редакцию: так родилась опера «Черевички» (новое название подсказал композитору его брат Модест), премьера которой состоялась уже в Москве в Большом театре. Она прошла 31 января 1887 года. Несмотря на блистательное дирижёрское выступление самого Чайковского и благосклонную реакцию публики, репертуарной она так и не стала.
