There is no great opera without a choir. And although he is thought of as the hero of the background, a moment of reflection is enough to make it clear that in the history of opera art, the foreground is undeniably the domain of the choir. The "Chorus Opera" is proof of this. It is a great, colorful spectacle, made with panache and humor, playing with convention, engaging in an intelligent game of associations and offering a lot of great music in an excellent performance. Premiere on Friday 7/10. Next performances: 8-9, 28-30 / 10, 4/02, 30/04.

In 2020, the National Opera in Warsaw celebrated the 55th anniversary of the reconstruction of its historic headquarters on Teatralny Square. The ambitious project to raise the theater from its ruins ended 20 years after the war - on November 19, 1965, the modernized Grand Theater was officially opened. Soon after, from the temporary headquarters at ul. Nowogrodzka, the Warsaw Opera ensemble has moved in, including its excellent choir.

The opening of the Teatr Wielki was an impulse for the further development of this ensemble: performances staged on the grand stage had to be performed by a powerful choir, which was the pride of subsequent productions. It soon gained the reputation of one of the best choirs in Poland, mainly due to the outstanding vocal disposition and team skills of its members and female members. Over the next years, the artistic quality of the ensemble was supervised by Józef Bok, Zofia Urbanyi-Świrska, Henryk Wojnarowski, Lech Giwyoda, Jan Szyrocki and Bogdan Gola. From the 2016/2017 season, the choir is headed by Mirosław Janowski. The ensemble performs in opera performances, takes part in symphonic concerts, and also conducts independent concert activities.

The excellent form of the ensemble prompted the outstanding French conductor Patrick Fournillier, from the 2020/2021 season, the music director of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera in Warsaw, to organize a gala concert with the Grand Theater Choir as the main protagonist.

After all, there is no shortage of great music repertoire for the choir. Writing group scenes with the participation of a choir is almost a separate composing skill that not every artist was able to cope with. Patrick Fournillier reached for the greatest achievements in this field, so the concert program is one great feast of musical hits.

The gala will start with the famous O Fortuna choir from Carla Orff 's Carmina Burana stage cantata, written with extraordinary flourish , followed by Italian music. We will hear two choirs from Giacomo Puccini's operas. Coro a bocca chiusa ( The Closed Mouth Choir ) from Act II of Madame Butterfly is a piece that is second to none. Sounds like a lullaby in a dreamland. It is Butterfly who puts her son to sleep, longing for the arrival of her beloved Captain Pinkerton. The choir hums a soothing melody accompanied by a pizzicata of the strings. Unfortunately, this is a prelude to the tragedy that will unfold in the next, third act.

In his last opera, Turandot , in turn, treated Puccini as a collective hero. Each of the three acts of this opera ends with a wonderful invocation of the choir. We will hear the first of them, Perche tarda la luna ( Why the moon so late ) from Act I. The crowd in front of the imperial palace impatiently waits for the delayed moonrise and senses another head cut off at the behest of Princess Turandot. It mixes the mood of mystery with triumph (trombones).

There will be excerpts from operas by other verist composers: we will hear Coro delle campagne from  Ruggier Leoncavalla 's Clowns, and the Grand Theater Orchestra will perform an instrumental Intermezzo evoking the crisp Sicilian landscapes of  Pietro Mascagni's peasant chivalry . There will be choirs from Giuseppe Verdi's operas ( Fuoco di gioia from  Othello , the Gypsy choir from  Troubadour ). Auto da fe from  Don Carloswhich will conclude the first part of the gala is the entire opera stage in which the choir chants the beautiful and triumphant song of the crowd that has gathered in the face of King Philip II to watch the burning at the stake of the heirs. The royal son, Don Carlos, calls on his father to stop his terror, but is arrested. The execution takes place, the choir is divided into two groups. The low voices symbolize the menacing voices of the torturers, the sopranos like a voice from heaven promise salvation to the martyred martyrs.

In turn, the choir from Act III of Traviata ( Coro di mattadori spagnuoli ), sung in this opera by Spaniards dressed as matadors, who came to the carnival in Paris, will be announced by another song in the second part of the gala - the famous choir Les voici…! from Act IV of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen . It brings the triumphant theme of the overture to this opera and shows a crowd of Seville residents waiting for the matadors to perform, parading to the sounds of this spectacular music.

Not only Italian music will be heard this evening. We will hear a choir of townspeople from  Richard Wagner's Nuremberg Singers and a choir of sailors from his Flying Dutchman . We will hear the sensual Song of Roxana from  King Roger by Karol Szymanowski, in which the queen is accompanied by a choir and a work of a completely different nature - the monumental Magnus Dominus from Symphony No. 7 Seven Gates of Jerusalem by Krzysztof Penderecki, in which three mixed choirs sing.

The finale is a mazur from The  Haunted Manor by Stanisław Moniuszko, sung in choir, starting with the words Hey, play violently, fuck our ear .

W 2020 roku Opera Narodowa w Warszawie obchodziła 55-lecie odbudowy swej historycznej siedziby na placu Teatralnym. Ambitny projekt podniesienia teatru z ruin zakończył się w 20 lat po wojnie – 19 listopada 1965 roku nastąpiło uroczyste otwarcie unowocześnionego Teatru Wielkiego. Wkrótce potem z tymczasowej siedziby przy ul. Nowogrodzkiej wprowadził się doń zespół Opery Warszawskiej, w tym jej wyśmienity chór.

Otwarcie Teatru Wielkiego stało się impulsem do dalszego rozwoju tego zespołu. W spektaklach wystawianych na wielkiej scenie musiał występować potężny chór, który był ozdobą kolejnych inscenizacji. Wkrótce zyskał on renomę jednego z najlepszych chórów w Polsce, przede wszystkim dzięki wybitnej dyspozycji wokalnej i umiejętności zespołowego muzykowania jego członków i członkiń. Nad jakością artystyczną zespołu przez kolejne lata czuwali Józef Bok, Zofia Urbanyi-Świrska, Henryk Wojnarowski, Lech Gorywoda, Jan Szyrocki i Bogdan Gola. Od sezonu 2016/2017 chórem kieruje Mirosław Janowski. Zespół występuje w przedstawieniach operowych, bierze udział w koncertach symfonicznych, prowadzi również samodzielną działalność koncertową.

Znakomita forma zespołu skłoniła wybitnego francuskiego dyrygenta Patricka Fournillier, od sezonu 2020/2021 dyrektora muzycznego Teatru Wielkiego - Opery Narodowej w Warszawie, do zorganizowania premiery spektaklu, którego Chór Teatru Wielkiego będzie głównym bohaterem.

Spektakl pokaże nie tylko możliwości muzyczne zespołu, ale także sceniczne efekty wizualne. Za inscenizację odpowiedzialny jest fiński reżyser Jere Erkkilä, za scenografię i kostiumy – Anna Kontek, która do tej premiery przygotowała ponad 500 efektownych kostiumów – niektóre ich zmiany odbędą się na oczach widzów. Liczne sceny taneczne zobaczymy w choreografii Ilony Molki. Całości będą towarzyszyć projekcje Ewy Krasuckiej, które razem z reżyserią świateł stworzą niezapomniane wizualne widowisko. 

Wspaniałego repertuaru muzycznego na chór przecież nie brakuje. Pisanie scen zespołowych z udziałem chóru to niemal osobna umiejętność kompozytorska, której nie każdy twórca był w stanie sprostać. Patrick Fournillier sięgnął po najwspanialsze osiągnięcia w tej dziedzinie, program wydarzenia jest więc jedną wielką feerią muzycznych przebojów.

Spektakl rozpocznie się słynnym, napisanym z niezwykłym rozmachem chórem O Fortuna z kantaty scenicznej Carmina Burana Carla Orffa, następnie zaś zabrzmi muzyka włoska. Usłyszmy dwa chóry z oper Giacoma Pucciniego. Coro a bocca chiusa (Chór z zamkniętymi ustami) z II aktu opery Madame Butterfly to utwór, który nie ma sobie równych. Brzmi jak kołysanka w krainie snów. To Butterfly usypia swojego synka, czekając z utęsknieniem na przybycie ukochanego kapitana Pinkertona. Chór nuci kojącą melodię przy akompaniamencie pizzicata smyczków. Niestety jest to preludium do tragedii, która rozegra się w następnym, trzecim akcie.

Z kolei w swojej ostatniej operze Turandot potraktował Puccini chór jako bohatera zbiorowego. Każdy z trzech aktów tej opery zakończony jest wspaniałą inwokacją chóru. Usłyszymy pierwszą z nich, Perche tarda la luna (Czemu księżyc tak późno) z I aktu. Tłum przed pałacem cesarskim oczekuje z niecierpliwością opóźniającego się wschodu księżyca i przeczuwa kolejną ściętą na rozkaz księżniczki Turandot głowę. Miesza się w nim nastrój tajemniczości z triumfem (puzony).

Nie zabraknie fragmentów z oper innych kompozytorów werystów: usłyszmy Coro delle campagne z Pajaców Ruggiera Leoncavalla, zaś Orkiestra Teatru Wielkiego wykona instrumentalne Intermezzo przywołujące rześkie sycylijskie krajobrazy z Rycerskości wieśniaczej Pietra Mascagniego oraz Viva il vino spumeggiante. Nie zabraknie chórów z oper Giuseppe Verdiego (Fuoco di gioia z Otella, chór Cyganów z Trubadura). Auto da fe z Don Carlosa, które zakończy część pierwszą.

Z kolei chór z II aktu Traviaty (Coro di mattadori spagnuoli) śpiewany w tej operze przez przebranych za matadorów Hiszpanów, którzy przybyli na karnawał do Paryża, zapowie inny utwór w drugiej części gali – słynny chór Les voici…! z IV aktu opery Georges’a Bizeta Carmen. Przynosi on triumfalny temat z uwertury do tej opery i ukazuje tłum mieszkańców Sewilli czekający na występy matadorów, którzy paradują przy dźwiękach tej widowiskowej muzyki.

Nie tylko muzyka włoska zabrzmi tego wieczora. Usłyszymy chór prządek i chór marynarzy z Latającego Holendra Richarda Wagnera. Zabrzmi zmysłowa Pieśń Roksany z Króla Rogera Karola Szymanowskiego, w której królowej towarzyszy chór oraz dzieło o zupełnie innym charakterze – monumentalny Magnus Dominus z VII Symfonii Siedem bram Jerozolimy Krzysztofa Pendereckiego, w którym śpiewają trzy chóry mieszane.

Finał to śpiewany chórem mazur ze Strasznego dworu Stanisława Moniuszki, zaczynający się od słów Hej zagrajcie siarczyście, rżnijcie nam od ucha.
