»Eben war ich noch der Mittelpunkt… und jetzt?«. Einst feierte Tilla Durieux große Bühnenerfolge. Jahre später ist alles anders: Nach dem Selbstmord ihres Ehemanns Paul Cassirer und der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten verlässt Tilla Deutschland und erlebt entbehrungsreiche Jahre als Näherin in Kroatien, bevor sie sieben Jahre nach Ende des Krieges zurückkehrt. Emil Jannings, der einst große Erfolge mit Stummfilmen feierte, muss sich den Nachfragen seines Neffen Jörg zu seinem Verhalten während der Nazi-Diktatur stellen und flüchtet sich ins fortwährende Spiel des Schauspielers. Diese so gegensätzlichen und doch auf besondere Art und Weise eng miteinander verbundenen Biografien der beiden Schauspieler stehen im Zentrum von Oscar Strasnoys Comeback, das als Auftragswerk für die Staatsoper Berlin entstand und als Eröffnung der letzten Werkstatt-Spielzeit seine Uraufführung erlebt.
