The Symphony Orchestra "Northern Symphony" of the St. Petersburg State Music Hall Theater (since March 2023 - the St. Petersburg State Musical Theater named after F. I. Chaliapin) was created on June 1, 2016; it was headed by Fabio Mastrangelo, artistic director of the theatre. At present, the Northern Symphony is one of the leading St. Petersburg orchestras. Famous pianists Ekaterina Mechetina, Polina Osetinskaya, Stanislav Chigadaev, Oleg Weinstein, Giuseppe Albanese and Ludovico Troncanetti, violinists Sergei Girshenko, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Count Murzha and Alexei Lundin, cellists Sergei Roldugin and Denis Shapovalov, guitarist Dmitry Illarionov, saxophonist Ula Asdal Rokkones, clarinetist Giampiero Sobrino, singers Ildar Abdrazakov, Larisa Dolina, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and Svetlana Kasyan, soloists of the Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky theaters, the St. Petersburg House of Music. The ensemble's extensive repertoire includes works from different eras and styles, Russian and foreign classics, and works by contemporary composers.
In addition to its own venue, the orchestra performs at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, the House of Scientists. M. Gorky of the Russian Academy of Sciences, etc. He regularly participates in the St. Petersburg International Festival "Opera for Everyone", the International Festival of Arts "Elena", the festival "Honorary Citizens of St. Petersburg", as well as in the programs of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, the St. Petersburg International Book Salon and the Music of the Palace Bridge festival.
The team is actively touring. In 2019, he took part in the Russian Seasons project in Germany, performed in Italy and Estonia. As part of the Festival of Musical Theaters of Russia "See the Music", the orchestra participated in the performance of "Don Pasquale" at the Moscow theater "New Opera" named after. E. V. Kolobov (2019) and The Bat at the Moscow Musical Theater Helikon-Opera (2021).
The most striking events in the life of the Northern Symphony in the 2021–2022 season were the multimedia musical project “ZHIVAGO. I went to the stage…”, concerts “Russian way. From Mussorgsky to Prokofiev”, “In the Beginning Was the Word”, “Russian Waltz”, “Leningrad Notebook”, “Light of Hope” and others.
In 2023, the ensemble will play Rachmaninov's music at various venues, including the Mariinsky Theatre; in addition, he performed with the Passion for Shakespeare concert at the State Academic Chapel of St. Petersburg and a number of other concerts.
