“There is real pain in this comedy, and real drama, and real love!”
Of all Mozart's operas "So do all women" / "Cosi fan tutte" the most difficult fate awaited. Perhaps not a single work of the composer met with such an ambiguous reception, did not cause so many conflicting opinions.

This opera closes the famous trilogy of Mozart and Da Ponte ("The Marriage of Figaro" - "Don Giovanni" - "That's what all women do"). The success of the Prague production of The Marriage of Figaro (1787) brought a commission for the opera Don Giovanni, and the Viennese production of The Marriage (1789) brought with it a commission for Cosi fan tutte. This time it came from Emperor Joseph II, who also owned the idea for the plot. According to some sources, the story of an unsuccessful test of the fidelity of two ladies actually happened, pretty much amused either the Viennese or the Venetian society.

For the first time, the opera All Women Do It, or the School for Lovers was presented on January 26, 1790 at the Vienna Burgtheater. However, at the end of February, the performances ceased - the emperor died, and on the occasion of mourning, all theaters were closed. In June 1790 the performances were resumed, but the opera only ran five times. Thus began her difficult stage life, during which she would be repeatedly remade, changed both the name and even the libretto.

For a long time, the libretto was considered a weak point - it was criticized for immorality, cynicism and implausibility. The Austrian music critic Eduard Hanslik was perplexed: “The constant blindness of the two heroines is amazing, who do not recognize their suitors only a quarter of an hour after they said goodbye to them, and who mistake their own maid, first for a doctor, and then for a notary, just because on her wig . " He also pronounced the harsh verdict that the 19th century passed on opera: “The immeasurable triviality of the libretto deals a mortal blow to the beautiful music of Mozart. The culture of our time, with all its desire, cannot reconcile itself to it. I think 'All Women Do It' is no longer suitable for the stage . "

But the 20th century, with its passion for play and mask, citations and the search for hidden meanings, rediscovers this opera, starting with the excitement of exploring it. And he comes to completely opposite conclusions: "That's what all women do" is Da Ponte's best libretto and Mozart's most sophisticated opera " (British musicologist Edward Joseph Dent). Thus, in a "stupid" libretto, a brilliant play of the mind is revealed. There are a lot of literary and musical quotations in the opera, Mozart and Da Ponte parody common places and stereotypes of 18th century operas, but not only them. The circle of literary associations is extraordinarily wide. According to some researchers, the literary model of the libretto goes back to Boccaccio's Decameron and Ariosto's Furious Roland, and in fact approaches the so-called "comedies of ideas" by Bernard Shaw.

Mozart and Da Ponte seem to be returning to the traditional form of the 18th century opera buffa with typified characters, as if they had come out of a commedia dell'arte. But this is only at first glance. A few years earlier, Mozart describes a similar model in a letter to his father: “Here you need two female roles of equal importance, one of them should be serious, the other half-character. And in terms of quality, the parties should be the same. The third female role can be entirely comic. It's the same with men.". But in “All Women Do It,” Mozart departs from the straightforwardness of this scheme. His heroes take on new features: the "serious" Ferrando also gets comic music, and the "semi-character" Dorabella gets an aria worthy of a tragic heroine. Opera completely falls outside the traditional definitions of the genre. The authors themselves designated it as "dramma giocoso", that is, "fun drama". In fact, "Cosi fan tutte" covers a huge range of genres - from "opera seria" (that is, "serious opera") to frivolous farce. The comic and the dramatic overlap. The inappropriateness of high pathos causes a smile, and behind the game situation, live human emotions and real drama are suddenly revealed. The opera was staged at the Bolshoi Theater only once, in 1978. Yuri Simonov conducted the premiere, Natalia Kasatkina and Vladimir Vasilev acted as stage directors, and Valery Leventhal designed the performance. The play ran 52 times and in 1986 was withdrawn from the repertoire.
In 1989, “All Women Do It” was brought to Milan's Grand Theater La Scala.

And in 2012, the Bolshoi returned to this opera again, presenting it in a concert performance on the stage of the Concert Hall. P.I. Tchaikovsky.
And now, two years later, "Cosi fan tutte" will finally appear in a "full-fledged" stage version. A very young production team demonstrated their view of this opera.


Floris Visser

The Dutch director Floris Visser, by the age of thirty, managed to work as an actor in drama theater and cinema, learn to be a vocalist, start teaching and, finally, enter the directing profession. He has staged performances at the Royal Theater Kare (Amsterdam), at the Netherlands Opera, the Royal Theater of The Hague, at the Osnabrück Theater (Germany), and is currently the artistic director of the Opera Trionfo Theater (Amstelveen, the Netherlands).

And the young director does not consider this opera frivolous at all:

- On the title page of the score, Mozart and Da Ponte very clearly identified the genre - "dramma giocoso". I think these people could not give a genre definition by accident. And for me the key word is "drama". Finding and showing the core of this drama, penetrating its essence is my main task. This is a rather lengthy process, and there is always a risk of getting lost halfway and mistaking the non-principal for the main. Moreover, so many meanings are hidden in this opera!

Caravaggio inspires me. It seems to me that he, like no one else, manages to capture a specific moment of the story that he wants to tell. He skillfully places accents and diverts less significant details into the shadows. That is, he works like a real director. I try to strive for the same. To achieve clarity of idea, naturalness in the game and avoid melodrama (which in the case of this opera is not very easy, since its libretto is still sometimes quite paradoxical).

From my point of view, there is only one world where this story, with all its disguises and misrecognitions, can naturally exist. This is the theater world. Therefore, we will create this magical world on the stage, and Don Alfonso will be the owner of it.

The key point, in my opinion, is the ending. We see four young people (and here it is very important that they are all very young) after they have received a very bitter lesson. We all receive such lessons throughout life. In fact, this is what growing up is. And we see next to them a man who has long been an adult - Don Alfonso. Why did he involve them in this game, the rules of which he himself changed along the way? The libretto does not answer this question.
But we can find similar motifs in the literature of that era - for example, in "Dangerous Liaisons" by Choderlos de Laclos. Such social games were something familiar for the 18th century. Personally, I am not inclined to view the ending as happy and conciliatory. It is enough to read the libretto to understand that this is not so. Nobody wins here. Everyone comes to the final with a broken heart. This is a very human opera. Despite the comedy and sometimes even farcicalness, it has real pain, and real drama, and true love.


Stefano Montanari and Alina Yarovaya Stefano Montanari,

a well-known Italian violinist and conductor, a specialist in authentic performance, became the musical director of the production. The conductor's track record includes collaboration with the Accademia Bizantina, Orchestra 1813 ensembles, the Baroque Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, the Lyon Opera, the La Fenice Theatre, the Opera Atelier in Toronto... And for him it was already the fourth performance of the opera Cosi fan tutte.

Stefano Montanari :

“Personally, I like to take a fresh look at a work that I have already conducted. The view of it gradually changes over time. In addition, each time you have to combine your vision with the concept of the director, and this can be very interesting. For example, now Floris focuses on the dramatic story of two couples and pays special attention to Don Alfonso. And what he does seems convincing to me. I also do not believe in the serenity of the finale. Love stories are destroyed. The characters assume their roles - the roles of men and women, trying to find a way to coexist.

"That's what all women do" is a story for all time. The story of what is a man and what is a woman. After all, our essence remains practically unchanged  throughout the history of mankind. When we  read Da  Ponte's text, it  does not  seem out of date. When I  read it for the  first time, I constantly repeated to myself: “Oh, it’s just  the way it  is!”.

Mozart's musical solutions are amazing: the way he constructed this opera, distributed the voices, how he decided the recitatives, how he used the forms of early music. The most beautiful thing about Mozart is that he is always new. Never repeats, each time looking for new means. Each of his operas is a discovery.

The performance is designed by the highly sought-after British artist Gideon Davey. He has worked with directors such as Robert Carsen, David Alden, Stephen Lawless. Performances in his design were shown at the Glyndebourne and Edinburgh Festivals, the Opera Festival in Aix-en-Provence, he collaborated with the leading opera and drama theaters of the world, including the Royal Opera Covent Garden, the English National Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Comische Opera in Berlin, Theater an der Wien, La Fenice, Lyon Opera, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, London's Royal National Theatre.

Из всех опер Моцарта «Так поступают все женщины»/«Cosi fan tutte» ждала самая непростая судьба. Пожалуй, ни одно произведение композитора не встречало такой неоднозначный прием, не вызывало столько противоречивых мнений.

Эта опера замыкает знаменитую трилогию Моцарта и Да Понте («Свадьба Фигаро» — «Дон Жуан» — «Так поступают все женщины»). Успех пражской постановки «Свадьбы Фигаро» (1787 г.) принес заказ на оперу «Дон Жуан», а венская постановка «Свадьбы» (1789 г.) повлекла за собой заказ на «Cosi fan tutte». На сей раз он поступил от императора Иосифа II, которому принадлежала и идея сюжета. По некоторым источникам, история неудачной проверки верности двух дам произошла в действительности, изрядно повеселив не то венское, не то венецианское общество.

Впервые опера «Так поступают все женщины, или Школа влюбленных» была представлена 26 января 1790 г. в венском Бургтеатре. Так начиналась ее непростая сценическая жизнь, на протяжении которой ее неоднократно будут переделывать, менять и название, и даже либретто.

На протяжении долгого времени слабым местом считалось либретто — его критиковали за аморальность, циничность и неправдоподобие. Австрийский музыкальный критик Эдуард Ганслик недоумевал: «Удивительна постоянная слепота двух героинь, которые не узнают своих женихов всего через четверть часа после того, как попрощались с ними, и которые принимают свою собственную горничную сначала за доктора, а затем за нотариуса только потому, что на ней парик». Он же произнес суровый приговор, который вынес опере XIX век: «Безмерная тривиальность либретто наносит смертельный удар прекрасной музыке Моцарта. Культура нашего времени при всем желании не может примириться с ним. Я считаю, что „Так поступают все женщины“ больше не подходит для сцены».

Но XX век с его увлечением игрой и маской, цитатностью и поисками потаенных смыслов, заново открывает эту оперу, начиная с азартом ее исследовать. И приходит к совершенно противоположным выводам: «Так поступают все женщины» — это лучшее либретто Да Понте и самая утонченная опера Моцарта» (британский музыковед Эдуард Джозеф Дент). Так в «глупом» либретто обнаруживается блестящая игра ума. В опере очень много литературных и музыкальных цитат, Моцарт и Да Понте пародируют общие места и стереотипы опер XVIII века, но и не только их. Круг литературных ассоциаций необычайно широк. По мнению некоторых исследователей, литературная модель либретто восходит к «Декамерону» Боккаччо и «Неистовому Роланду» Ариосто, а по сути приближается к так называемым «комедиям идей» Бернарда Шоу.

Моцарт и Да Понте как будто возвращаются к традиционной форме оперы-буффа XVIII века с типизированными персонажами, словно вышедшими из комедии дель арте. Но это лишь на первый поверхностный взгляд. Несколькими годами ранее Моцарт описывает подобную модель в письме своему отцу: «Тут нужны две женские роли одинакового значения, одна из них должна быть серьезной, другая — полухарактерной. А по качеству партии должны быть одинаковыми. Третья женская роль может быть целиком комической. Так же и с мужчинами». Но в «Так поступают все женщины» Моцарт уходит от прямолинейности этой схемы. Его герои обретают новые черты: «серьезному» Феррандо достается и комическая музыка, а «полухарактерная» Дорабелла получает арию, достойную трагической героини. Опера совершенно выпадает из традиционных определений жанра. Сами авторы обозначили его как «dramma giocoso», то есть «веселая драма». В действительности же «Cosi fan tutte» охватывает огромный спектр жанров — от «opera seria» (то есть «серьезной оперы») до легкомысленного фарса. Комическое и драматическое накладываются друг на друга. Неуместность высокой патетики вызывает улыбку, а за игровой ситуацией вдруг обнаруживаются живые человеческие эмоции и настоящая драма. За кажущейся поверхностностью сюжета скрываются размышления о мотивах поступков человека, изменчивости его природы, о принятых в обществе правилах и «велениях сердца».

В Большом театре опера была поставлена лишь один раз — в 1978 г. Дирижировал премьерой Юрий Симонов, в качестве режиссеров-постановщиков выступили Наталия Касаткина и Владимир Василев, оформил спектакль Валерий Левенталь. Спектакль прошел 52 раза и в 1986 г. был снят с репертуара.
В 1989 г. «Так поступают все женщины» привез в Большой миланский театр Ла Скала.

А в 2012 г. Большой вновь вернулся к этой опере, представив ее в концертном исполнении на сцене Концертного зала им. П.И. Чайковского.
И вот два года спустя «Cosi fan tutte» наконец предстанет в «полноценном» сценическом варианте. Свой взгляд на эту оперу продемонстрировала совсем молодая постановочная команда.


Флорис Виссер

Голландский режиссер Флорис Виссер к тридцати годам успел поработать в качестве актера драматического театра и кино, выучиться на вокалиста, начать преподавать и, наконец, прийти в режиссерскую профессию. Он ставил спектакли в Королевском театре Каре (Амстердам), в Нидерландской опере, Королевском театре Гааги, в театре Оснабрюка (Германия), а в настоящее время является художественным руководителем театра Opera Trionfo (Амстелвен, Нидерланды).

И молодой режиссер совсем не считает эту оперу легкомысленной:

— На титульной странице партитуры Моцарт и Да Понте очень ясно обозначили жанр — «dramma giocoso». Думаю, эти люди не могли дать жанровое определение случайно. И для меня ключевым словом является именно «драма». Найти и показать сердцевину этой драмы, проникнуть в ее суть — моя главная задача. Это довольно длительный процесс, и здесь всегда есть риск потеряться на полпути и принять неглавное за главное. Тем более что в этой опере скрыто столько смыслов!

Меня вдохновляет Караваджо. Мне кажется, ему, как никому другому, удается схватить конкретный момент истории, которую он хочет рассказать. Он мастерски расставляет акценты и уводит в тень менее существенные детали. То есть работает, как настоящий режиссер. Я стараюсь стремиться к тому же. Добиться ясности идеи, естественности в игре и уйти от мелодраматичности (что в случае с этой оперой не слишком просто, поскольку ее либретто все-таки порой довольно парадоксально).

С моей точки зрения, есть только один мир, где этот сюжет со всеми его переодеваниями и не-узнаваниями, может естественно существовать. Это мир театра. Поэтому мы создадим на сцене этот волшебный мир, и хозяином его будет Дон Альфонсо.

Ключевым моментом, на мой взгляд, является финал. Мы видим четверых молодых людей (а здесь очень важно, что все они очень молоды) после того, как они получили очень горький урок. Такие уроки мы получаем все в течение жизни. По сути, это и есть взросление. И видим рядом с ними человека уже давно взрослого — Дона Альфонсо. Почему он вовлек их в эту игру, правила которой сам же менял по ходу? Либретто не дает ответа на этот вопрос.
Но сходные мотивы мы можем найти в литературе той эпохи — к примеру, в «Опасных связях» Шодерло де Лакло. Подобные социальные игры были для XVIII века чем-то привычным. Лично я не склонен рассматривать финал как счастливый и примирительный. Достаточно вчитаться в либретто, чтобы понять: это не так. Здесь никто не побеждает. Каждый приходит к финалу с разбитым сердцем. Это очень человечная опера. Несмотря на комичность и временами даже фарсовость, в ней есть и настоящая боль, и настоящая драма, и настоящая любовь.

Музыкальным руководителем постановки стал известный итальянский скрипач и дирижер, специалист по аутентичному исполнительству Стефано Монтанари. В «послужном списке» дирижера — сотрудничество с ансамблями «Accademia Bizantina», «Orchestra 1813», барочным оркестром Национальной академии Санта-Чечилия, Лионской оперой, театром Ла Фениче, Оперой-Ателье в Торонто... И для него это была уже четвертая постановка оперы «Cosi fan tutte».

Стефано Монтанари:

— Лично я люблю по-новому взглянуть на произведение, которым уже дирижировал. Взгляд на него с течением времени постепенно меняется. К тому же, каждый раз надо соединить свое видение с концепцией режиссера, а это может быть очень интересно. Например, сейчас Флорис акцентирует внимание на драматической истории двух пар и особое внимание уделяет Дону Альфонсо. И то, что он делает, мне кажется убедительным. Я тоже не верю в безмятежность финала. Любовные истории разрушены. Герои принимают свои роли — роли мужчин и женщин, пытаясь найти способ сосуществования.

«Так поступают все женщины» — история на все времена. История о том, что такое мужчина и что такое женщина. Ведь наша суть остается практически неизменной на протяжении всей истории человечества. Когда мы читаем текст Да Понте, он не кажется устаревшим. Когда я читал его в первый раз, постоянно повторял про себя: «О, ведь так же оно и есть!».

Музыкальные решения Моцарта поразительны: то, как он сконструировал эту оперу, распределил голоса, как решил речитативы, как использовал формы старинной музыки. Самое прекрасное в Моцарте, что он всегда новый. Никогда не повторяется, каждый раз ищет новые средства. Каждая его опера — это открытие.

Спектакль оформляет очень востребованный британский художник Гидеон Дэйви. Он работал с такими режиссерами, как Роберт Карсен, Дэвид Олден, Стивен Лоулесс. Спектакли в его оформлении были показаны на Глайндборнском и Эдинбургском фестивалях, Оперном фестивале в Экс-ан-Провансе, он сотрудничал с ведущими оперными и драматическими театрами мира, среди которых Королевская опера Ковент-Гарден, Английская национальная опера, Баварская государственная опера, Комише-опер в Берлине, Театр-ан-дер-Вин, Ла Фениче, Лионская опера, шекспировский театр Глобус, лондонский Королевский национальный театр.
