Going beyond commonplaces about infidelity, Così fan tutte explores the intermittences of the heart and the fragility of desire. After borrowing the subject of The Marriage of Figaro from Beaumarchais and that of Don Giovanni from Molière , Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte imagine an original plot. The story ? Two young lovers who are a little too sure of themselves will learn the inconstancy of women the hard way. 

We have long considered this opera as a carefree, even misogynistic and immoral comedy before realizing the feverish gravity which is its true substance. Under the apparent lightness of a love affair, hides a disenchanted lesson on human nature which sinks into the vertigo of a destructive desire. Improbable farce, philosophical fable on love, romantic and desperate tragi-comedy, Cosi fan tutte is all of these and more. Because if it is indeed a bittersweet meditation on the infidelity of women, against a backdrop of cross-dressing, false farewells and deceit, it is above all a sensual and terribly erotic work where it is a question of temptations, of bodies put naked, a work that highlights the illusions of love and the mirage of fidelity that does not stand the test of time.

Oscillating between licentiousness, tenderness, amorous burning and resignation, the work is carried by a music which marries the breathless rhythm of the story, a music of an infinite delicacy which never deceives nor lies, the most radiant perhaps never written by Mozart.

En dépassant les lieux communs sur l’infidélité, Così fan tutte explore les intermittences du cœur et la fragilité du désir. Après avoir emprunté à Beaumarchais le sujet des Noces de Figaro et à Molière celui de Don Giovanni, Mozart et Lorenzo da Ponte imaginent une intrigue originale. L’histoire ? Deux jeunes amants un peu trop sûrs d’eux vont apprendre à leurs dépens l’inconstance des femmes. 

On a longtemps considéré cet opéra comme une comédie insouciante, voire misogyne et immorale avant de se rendre compte de la gravité fiévreuse qui en est le véritable fond. Sous l’apparente légèreté d’un chassé-croisé amoureux, se cache une leçon désenchantée sur la nature humaine qui sombre dans les vertiges d’un désir destructeur. Farce invraisemblable, fable philosophique sur l’amour, tragi-comédie romantique et désespérée, Cosi fan tutte est tout cela à la fois, et bien plus encore. Car si c’est bien une méditation douce-amère sur l’infidélité des femmes, sur fond de travestissements, de faux adieux et de tromperies, c’est surtout une œuvre sensuelle et terriblement érotique où il est question de tentations, de corps mis à nus, une œuvre qui met en évidence les illusions de l’amour et le mirage de la fidélité qui ne résiste pas à l’épreuve du temps.

Oscillant entre libertinage, tendresse, brûlure amoureuse et résignation, l’œuvre est portée par une musique qui épouse le rythme haletant de l’histoire, une musique d’une infinie délicatesse qui, elle, ne trompe ni ne ment jamais, la plus radieuse peut-être jamais écrite par Mozart.
