Fiordiligi loves Guilelmo and Dorabella loves Ferrando. At the moment. In order to find out how enduring love actually is, cynic Don Alfonso proposes a bet to Guilelmo and Ferrando: They should fool their sweethearts into thinking they have to go to war in order to come back from behind in disguise and then court each other. "It'll never work," both lovers are sure of that and hit it off without hesitation. But as soon as the experiment has begun, the beautiful world of the couple begins to crack, and Alfonso and maid Despina only have to help subtly to bring the hard truth about the actual nature of love to light...

The fast-paced chamber play about love and loyalty, which bears the full title »Così fan tutte ossia La scuola degli amanti« (»That’s how everyone does it or The School of Lovers«), is the crowning glory of the collaboration between the librettist genius da Ponte and the Composer genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. An explosive material for a world premiere at Vienna's Burgtheater in 1790, which demonstrated during the French Revolution that not only political orders, but also basic social pillars such as marriage are not inviolable. It is hard to imagine that Emperor Joseph II himself was the initiator of this opera project, which is unparalleled to this day in terms of its radical nature and simultaneous musical beauty. Director Olivier Tambosi, who has already caused a sensation with his productions at London's Royal Opera House Covent Garden and at the New York Metropolitan Opera, shows his view of what is perhaps one of the most sophisticated and ambiguous operas in music history!

Um herauszufinden, wie dauerhaft die Liebe eigentlich ist, schlägt Zyniker Don Alfonso Guilelmo und Ferrando eine Wette vor: Sie sollen ihren Herzensdamen vorgaukeln, in den Krieg ziehen zu müssen, um hinterrücks in Verkleidung zurückzukommen und dann der jeweils anderen den Hof zu machen. »Das klappt nie«, da sind sich beide Verliebte sicher und schlagen bedenkenlos ein. Doch kaum hat das Experiment begonnen, bekommt die schöne Paarwelt allzu menschliche Risse, und Alfonso und Zofe Despina müssen nur noch ganz unmerklich nachhelfen, um die harte Wahrheit über das tatsächliche Wesen der Liebe ans Licht zu bringen…

Ein brisanter Stoff für eine Uraufführung am Wiener Burgtheater im Jahr 1790, der in Zeiten der Französischen Revolution demonstriert, dass nicht nur politische Ordnungen, sondern auch gesellschaftliche Grundpfeiler wie die Ehe nicht unantastbar sind.
