Cries and Whispers, Joao MacDowell’s third opera, was freely inspired by the homonymous Ingmar Bergman film.

“I wanted to process my own experience of having lost a sister at a young age. The plot centers on three sisters as they prepare for the imminent death of the youngest. It is a spiritual tribute to Bergman and also to the myth of Hecate,” - MacDowell
