„Kraina uśmiechu” to romantyczna historia rozgrywająca się w egzotycznej scenerii. Liza zakochuje się w pięknym księciu Su-Czongu, i w jednej chwili podejmuje decyzję o wyjeździe do Chin i o poślubieniu swojego ukochanego. W ten sposób, pod romansowym konwencjonalnym kostiumem, pojawia się inny temat: spotkanie dwóch równorzędnych kultur – Zachodniej Europy i Chin, i próba dialogu pomiędzy nimi. To zapisany w libretcie ślad po autentycznej fascynacji Orientem, potęgą starej, wielkiej cywilizacji z jej osobnymi wartościami i zwyczajami. Ale ten metaforyczny, podwójny romans Europy i Chin – księcia Su-Czonga i Lizy Lichenfelds, oraz księżniczki Mi i porucznika Gustawa von Pottensteina – nie kończy się happy endem. Fascynacja zamienia się w gorzką wiedzę, różnice kulturowe i społeczne okazują się nieprzekraczalne, a marzenia o miłości i emancypacji – niemożliwe do zrealizowania ani w Chinach, ani w Europie. Orient okazuje się początkowo pięknym snem, który zmienia się w odzierający ze złudzeń koszmar. Liza i Gutek odjeżdżają, żegnani arią Su-Czonga. „Nie płacz, mała Mi”… „Uśmiech na ustach na dobre i złe”… Finał ujawnia ironiczny, pełen tragizmu sens tytułu tej późnej operetki z okresu tauberowskiego, trudnej do zakwalifikowania, spoglądającej w stronę opery.
A może jedynym prawdziwym miejscem w tym świecie jest więc Prater – świat wyobrażeń i tęsknoty za miłością?

"Land of Smiles" is a romantic story set in an exotic setting. Liza falls in love with the beautiful Prince Su-Chong, and in an instant decides to go to China and marry her beloved. In this way, under the conventional romance costume, another theme appears: the meeting of two equal cultures - Western Europe and China, and an attempt at dialogue between them. It is a trace of a genuine fascination with the Orient, the power of an old, great civilization with its separate values ​​and customs, recorded in the libretto. But this metaphorical double romance between Europe and China - Prince Su-Chong and Liza Lichenfelds, and Princess Mi and Lieutenant Gustav von Pottenstein - does not end happily. Fascination turns into bitter knowledge, cultural and social differences turn out to be impassable, and dreams of love and emancipation impossible to realize either in China or in Europe. The Orient turns out to be a beautiful dream at first, which turns into a disillusioning nightmare. Liza and Gutek leave, bid farewell to Su-Chong's aria. "Don't cry, little Mi"... "Smile on my lips for good and bad"... The finale reveals the ironic, tragic sense of the title of this late Tauber operetta, difficult to classify, looking towards the opera.
Or maybe the only real place in this world is the Prater - the world of imagination and longing for love?
