Every work of art must be understood within its historical framework, as it contains meanings that were unknown and unpredictable at the time of its production. This is what happened to composer David Lang when he attended a performance of Fidelio , Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera. In Prisoner of the State there is an active appropriation of Fideliofrom its post-revolutionary context that results in a new opera conceived for a concert hall, where the orchestra constitutes a scenic element. Starting from the existence of gaps in an opera that was rewritten several times, Lang emphasizes, from the libretto itself, the most dramatic aspects and the concepts of love and freedom, as well as the fate of political prisoners, who pass to a foreground feeding on quotations from thinkers such as Rousseau or Bentham, leaving aside the romantic plot and addressing the current viewer. The work has been defined as a fascinating contemporary singspieland has obtained a positive reception on both sides of the Atlantic, achieving a rare unanimity in newly created scores. In conclusion, a celebration of musical hermeneutics in which three horizons merge: that of Beethoven, that of Lang and that of the public attending its national premiere in 2023.

Tota obra d’art ha d’entendre’s dins del seu marc històric, ja que conté significats que en el moment de la seva producció eren desconeguts i imprevisibles. Això és el que li va passar al compositor David Lang en assistir a una representació de Fidelio, l’única òpera de Ludwig van Beethoven. A Prisoner of the State (Presoner de l’Estat) hi ha una apropiació activa del Fidelio des del seu context postrevolucionari que dona com a resultat una nova òpera concebuda per a una sala de concerts, on l’orquestra constitueix un element escènic. Partint de l’existència de llacunes en una òpera que es va reescriure diverses vegades, Lang subratlla, des del llibret mateix, els aspectes més dramàtics i els conceptes d’amor i llibertat, així com el destí dels presos polítics, que passen a un primer pla alimentant-se de cites de pensadors com Rousseau o Bentham, deixant de banda la trama romàntica i dirigint-se a l’espectador actual. L’obra ha estat definida com un fascinant singspiel contemporani i ha obtingut una recepció positiva a banda i banda de l’Atlàntic, aconseguint una unanimitat poc freqüent en les partitures de nova creació. En conclusió, una festa de l’hermenèutica musical en què es fonen tres horitzons: el de Beethoven, el de Lang i el del públic que assisteixi a la seva estrena nacional el 2023.
