Sir Basil is in love with Angèle Didier, a celebrated opera singer. He would marry her, but he must also take into account social expectations - he cannot marry below his rank. Therefore, he is looking for an aristocrat who is willing to enter into a short-term sham marriage with Angèle, so that he can marry the star of the theater after their pre-arranged divorce. René, the Count of Luxembourg, is perfectly suited for this purpose, and in exchange for a large sum of money, he undertakes to marry Angèle without ever having seen her. At Basil's request, a Spanish wall separates the young couple from each other at the ceremony, only their hands meet when they pull the rings, and a hand kiss is the marriage seal. Angèle and René do not remain unknown to each other for long, and with their divorce, one of the biggest trials of their lives awaits them.

Sir Basil szerelmes Angèle Didier-be, az Opera ünnepelt énekesnőjébe. Feleségül is venné, de a társadalmi elvárásokra is tekintettel kell lennie – nem házasodhat rangján alul. Ezért olyan arisztokratát keres, aki hajlandó Angèle-lel rövid ideig tartó látszatházasságra lépni, hogy majd előre megállapodott válásuk után ő kössön házasságot a színház csillagával. E célra kiválóan alkalmas René, Luxemburg grófja, aki egy komoly összegért cserébe vállalkozik arra, hogy Angèle-t feleségül vegye anélkül, hogy valaha látta volna. Basil kérésére a szertartáson is egy spanyolfal választja el egymástól az ifjú párt, mindössze a kezük találkozik a gyűrűhúzáskor, s egy kézcsók a hitvesi pecsét. Angèle és René nem sokáig maradnak ismeretlenek egymás számára, válásukkal pedig életük egyik legnagyobb megpróbáltatása vár rájuk.
