The Silver Lake
It needed a director at the height of this crazy play and Ersan Mondtag, the new darling of German theater, does not deserve it. With spectacular sets and exuberant costumes, he electrifies this play and gives it back its burning topicality in a Europe plagued by the return of nationalisms.

The breathtaking success of this production - prize for the best European co-production by the Syndicat français de la critique - owes a lot to the actor Benny Claessens who carries it with a beating drum. A real beast of the stage, this Flemish cut his teeth in Belgium before becoming one of the leading actors of the Kammerspiele in Munich and then of the Schaubühne in Berlin. During the Premiere at the Antwerp Opera, we witnessed his ability to turn the hall into a replica.

Il fallait un metteur en scène à la hauteur de cette pièce déjantée et Ersan Mondtag, nouvelle coqueluche du théâtre allemand, ne démérite pas. À grands coups de décors spectaculaires et de costumes exubérants, il électrise cette pièce et lui redonne sa brûlante actualité dans une Europe en proie au retour des nationalismes.

La réussite époustouflante de cette production - prix de la meilleure coproduction européenne par le Syndicat français de la critique - doit beaucoup au comédien Benny Claessens qui la porte tambour battant. Véritable bête de scène, ce Flamand a fait ses armes en Belgique avant de devenir l’un des acteurs phares de la Kammerspiele de Munich puis de la Schaubühne de Berlin. Lors de la Première à l’Opéra d’Anvers, on a été témoin de sa capacité à retourner la salle en une réplique.
