DER VOGELHÄNDLER - Carl Zeller - Stadttheater Klagenfurt

With Der Vogelhändler , premiered in 1891 at the Theater an der Wien, Carl Zeller (1842-1898) and his librettists created one of the most successful operettas of its time, indeed of the genre as a whole. This is probably also due to the fact that the ingredients of this well-constructed musical comedy of mistaken identity are in perfect proportion to each other on stage: a lot of rural idyll, plenty of folksyness, a strong pinch of eroticism, a good portion of feeling and lots of catchy melodies like I am Christel from the Post and of course roses are given to each other in Tyrol.

If you wanted to retell the content of the popular operetta, you would start to skid, since the characters themselves usually don't know who they are dealing with. The bird dealer Adam from Tyrol flirts with Marie without knowing that she is actually the Electress. His bride, the postwoman Christel, believes she is against the elector when she wants to get Adam promoted to menagerie inspector. But it is the dissolute Count Stanislaus, the highly indebted nephew of the electoral forest warden and game master Baron Weps, who has slipped into the role of elector and brazenly exploits his new position. In any case, in the end all the complications and matters of the heart resolve themselves with pleasure.
