Με ένα θέμα ανάλαφρο και δροσερό, με μια πλοκή γεμάτη χιούμορ, παρεξηγήσεις και ανατροπές, και βέβαια με μια υπέροχη μουσική όπου κυριαρχούν τα λαμπρά βαλς, δεν είναι περίεργο που η Νυχτερίδα του Γιόχαν Στράους του νεότερου έχει γίνει μέσα στα χρόνια η πιο διάσημη, δημοφιλής και αντιπροσωπευτική βιεννέζικη οπερέτα. Από το 1874, εδώ δηλαδή και ενάμιση αιώνα, δεν έχει σταματήσει να ψυχαγωγεί και να τέρπει το κοινό όλου του πλανήτη, μεταφέροντας μέσα από τη διάθεση του καρναβαλιού και τις φυσαλίδες της σαμπάνιας λίγη από την αυτοκρατορική αίγλη της μπελ επόκ.
Η υπόθεση του έργου βασίζεται σε μια φάρσα που είχε γίνει στο παρελθόν. Τρία χρόνια νωρίτερα και έπειτα από έναν αποκριάτικο χορό, ο μπον βιβέρ Γκάμπριελ φον Αϊζενστάιν είχε εγκαταλείψει στο κέντρο της πόλης τον φίλο του, δρα Φάλκε, μεθυσμένο και μασκαρεμένο με κοστούμι νυχτερίδας. Τώρα ο Φάλκε, με τη συγκατάθεση του Ρώσου πρίγκιπα Ορλόσφκι που παραθέτει έναν μεγαλοπρεπή χορό, χρησιμοποιεί την περίσταση για να πάρει μια εύθυμη και αθώα εκδίκηση, εμπλέκοντας τη σύζυγο και την υπηρέτρια του φίλου του. Έπειτα από μια βραδιά οινοποσίας, μεταμφιέσεων και παρεξηγήσεων, το επόμενο πρωί καταλήγουν όλοι για διαφορετικούς λόγους στη φυλακή, όπου τελικά αποκαλύπτεται η πραγματικότητα.
Το 2014 η Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή είχε ανεβάσει τη Νυχτερίδα σε μια μοντέρνα εκδοχή, όπου τα μέγαρα της Αυστροουγγαρίας είχαν αντικατασταθεί από τα αθηναϊκά σαλόνια της δεκαετίας του ’60, οι Βιεννέζοι ευγενείς από τους... συνταγματάρχες του απριλιανού πραξικοπήματος και οι Ρώσοι πρίγκιπες από Σοβιετικούς πρέσβεις. Εκείνη η πολυσυζητημένη και άκρως επιτυχημένη Νυχτερίδα, πέντε χρόνια μετά το ανέβασμά της στην Αθήνα, παρουσιάζεται τώρα σε μια νέα, μεγάλη παραγωγή του Μεγάρου Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης και της Κρατικής Ορχήστρας Θεσσαλονίκης, με τους ίδιους βασικούς συντελεστές αλλά με διαφορετική διανομή, ορχήστρα και χορωδία.

With a light and breezy theme, with a plot full of humor, misunderstandings and twists, and of course with a wonderful music dominated by brilliant waltzes, it is no wonder that The Bat by Johann Strauss the Younger has become over the years the most famous, popular and representative Viennese operetta. Since 1874, that is a century and a half, it has not stopped entertaining and delighting the public of the whole planet, conveying through the mood of the carnival and the bubbles of champagne some of the imperial glamor of the Belle Epoque.
The premise of the play is based on a prank that was done in the past. Three years earlier and after a Halloween dance, the bon viveur Gabriel von Eisenstein had abandoned his friend Dr. Falke, drunk and disguised in a bat costume, in the city center. Now Phalke, with the consent of the Russian prince Orlosfki who puts on a grand dance, uses the occasion to take a lighthearted and innocent revenge, involving his friend's wife and maid. After a night of drinking, disguises and misunderstandings, the next morning they all end up in jail for different reasons, where the truth is finally revealed.
In 2014, the National Opera staged the Batin a modern version, where the palaces of Austria-Hungary had been replaced by the Athenian salons of the 60s, the Viennese nobles by the... colonels of the April coup and the Russian princes by Soviet ambassadors. That much-discussed and highly successful Bat , five years after it was staged in Athens, is now presented in a new, major production of the Thessaloniki Music Hall and the Thessaloniki State Orchestra, with the same main actors but with a different cast, orchestra and chorus.
