Pontevedrino - once the richest state in Europe - is broke. Gone are the sweet life and the times of lavish festivals in which the dear "fatherland" was celebrated. In order to avert the impending bankruptcy, the Paris ambassador Baron Zeta plans to marry his secretary Danilo to the wealthy widow Hanna Glawari and to secure their millions for the fatherland. But Danilo prefers to spend his time with the girls at Maxim's and doesn't seriously consider getting married. Especially not when he realizes that he shares a common past with the rich and beautiful Hanna. And the fun-loving young widow is smart enough to keep the greedy suitors at bay. With the worldwide success of the Merry Widow1905 saw the birth of the modern operetta, also known as "silver" or "romantic", as the successor to Offenbach and Strauss. With its dazzlingly new, erotic instrumentation and the modern depiction of love as a proud test of strength between two equally strong partners, the work became a role model for an entire era never to be matched again.
