Dürrenmatts Drama – sein irrwitzigstes und schwärzestes – handelt davon, dass die Erde ein kostbarer, schützenswerter Ort ist. Die Verquickung von Markt und Macht ist zu einer Allvernichtungsmaschine geworden; eine Gegenwehr ist unmöglich und bleibt doch die größte Sehnsucht. Es erzählt von einem „verlotterten Irrenhaus“, in dem drei ehemalige Physiker als Patienten leben. Doch alle spielen ihren Wahn nur vor: Der eine, Möbius, weil er im Besitz der Weltformel ist und voller Angst, die Mächtigen der Erde könnten sie missbrauchen. Die beiden anderen, weil sie in Wahrheit Geheimagenten sind, angesetzt auf Möbius von ebenjenen Mächtigen der Erde, um seine Entdeckung zu missbrauchen.

Dürrenmatt's drama - his craziest and darkest - is about the fact that the earth is a precious place worth protecting. The combination of market and power has become a machine of all-destruction; resistance is impossible and yet remains the greatest longing. It tells of a “rundown madhouse” in which three former physicists live as patients. But everyone is just faking their madness: one, Möbius, because he is in possession of the world formula and is afraid that the powers of the earth could misuse it. The other two, because they are actually secret agents, hired by the very powerful people on Earth to target Möbius in order to abuse his discovery.
