Gerda and Kay are best friends. But when Kay gets a splinter in her eye, everything is suddenly different. He thinks Gerda and his other friends are childish, well-behaved and stupid and follows the seductive voice of the ice-beautiful Snow Queen. Now Gerda sets out - and while she is looking for her Kay, she finds herself: in the eerily beautiful realm of the flower queen, at the boring golden court of the princess, in the dangerous, dark cave of the robber queen, she learns to stand up for herself and her friends . With the help of the crow and reindeer, she finally finds her way to the cold north of Lapland and with the real power of friendship - laughter - can free her Kay from the clutches of the Snow Queen.

Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale has been an integral part of children's rooms for generations - and has inspired authors and composers. Now in November and December the carpentry of the Deutsche Oper Berlin is being transformed into the icy-cold world of the Snow Queen. Composer Samuel Penderbayne, librettist Christian Schönfelder and director Brigitte Dethier go on Gerda's journey with an actress, three singers and five musicians. Together they tell a road movie with humor and a shudder: Music-making flowers, a croaking clarinet, a tuba reindeer and the eerily beautiful synthesizer world of the Snow Queen are just a few ingredients for this musical theater, in which the children are close to the action.
