Something is going on in Cyprus! Pygmalion, the best sculptor of antiquity, has created a statue of perfect female beauty: the beautiful Galathée, which he always keeps hidden from strangers so that he can enjoy it all by himself. Even his loyal servant Ganymede is only allowed to see them to dust them off. When the rich art patron Mydas secretly takes a look at the work of art and is determined to purchase the statue, the jealous Pygmalion, who is in love with the marble lady, chases him out of the studio. And then the unimaginable happens: the statue comes to life! Unfortunately, she doesn't really show herself from the best side and turns out to be a man-made woman full of vanity and coquetry - to the disappointment of the sculptor, he believes that a good soul must be in a perfect body ...

The piquant and ludicrous work about marble beauty with its melodic richness is one of Suppé's best creations - without these, “Pygmalion” by George Bernard Shaw and “One Touch of Venus” by Kurt Weill would not have been imaginable.
