At first glance, it is a typical fairytale story: a prince is given the task of rescuing a kidnapped princess and in return is allowed to marry her. Of course, he immediately throws himself into the adventure, accompanied by a funny, somewhat less heroic nature boy and two magic instruments: a glockenspiel and a magic flute. They have to pass exams, and in the end things work out and (almost) everyone finds their happiness.

Of course , the paths in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Magic Flute are a bit more enchanted . The Singspiel, premiered in 1791, the year of his death, forms the conclusion and one of the absolute highlights in the operatic output of this genius, who died much too young. In it, the composer immortalized many of his immortal melodies between folk tunes and coloratura arias: Papageno's song for the bird catcher, for example, or the revenge aria of the Queen of the Night. The wild mix of Viennese folk theatre, mystery play, comedy, enlightenment and Freemason symbolism is not only fun, but ultimately raises the very fundamental question: what does it mean to be human?

Patrick Schlosser's production celebrates Mozart's probably most famous and popular opera as a festival of fantasy.

Auf den ersten Blick ist es eine typische Märchengeschichte: Ein Prinz bekommt die Aufgabe, eine entführte Prinzessin zu retten, und darf sie im Gegenzug heiraten. Natürlich stürzt er sich sofort ins Abenteuer, begleitet von einem lustigen, etwas weniger heldenhaften Naturburschen sowie zwei Zauberinstrumenten: einem Glockenspiel und einer Zauberflöte. Sie müssen Prüfungen bestehen, und zum Schluss geht die Sache auf und (fast) alle finden zu ihrem Glück.

Ein bisschen verwunschener sind die Wege in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts Die Zauberflöte dann natürlich doch. Das in seinem Todesjahr 1791 uraufgeführte Singspiel bildet den Abschluss und einen der absoluten Höhepunkte im Opernschaffen dieses viel zu früh verstorbenen Genies. Darin verewigte der Komponist viele seiner unsterblichen Melodien zwischen Volksweise und Koloraturarie: Papagenos Vogelfänger-Lied etwa, oder die Rachearie der Königin der Nacht. Der wilde Mix aus Wiener Volkstheater, Mysterienspiel, Komödie, Aufklärungs- und Freimauer-Symbolik macht nicht nur Spass, sondern kommt letztlich auf die ganz grundsätzliche Frage: Was heisst es, ein Mensch zu sein?

Die Inszenierung von Patrick Schlösser feiert Mozarts wohl berühmteste und beliebteste Oper als ein Fest der Fantasie.
