Armed with a magical flute, a prince is sent by the Queen of the Night to free her daughter from the hands of the cruel Sarastro. But during his mission, the prince discovers that the world is different than he had been led to believe. What started as a rescue operation turns into a musical purification ritual of young people getting ready to take over from the old guard. Die Zauberflöte is an opera with many layers: comic and profound, humanistic and enchanting, complex and accessible.

A4 pages turn into birds before your very eyes, a bunch of empty bottles become chimes and a moving platform is a mountain one moment, then a prison and a moment later suddenly a conference table. By stimulating the imagination of the spectators with elementary means, McBurney shows the magic of the theater. The musical direction is in the hands of the versatile conductor Riccardo Minasi, who previously conducted Handel's Rodelinda and Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro with great success at DNO.

 

THE CAST
The Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans once again shines in the role of the comical and disarming Papageno. He shares the stage with soprano Ying Fang (Pamina), who became a crowd favorite at DNO with roles in Le nozze di Figaro and Der Freischütz . The young, rising tenor Mingjie Lei takes on the challenging role of Prince Tamino, while the celebrated bass Christof Fischesser plays the role of sun priest Sarastro.

Gewapend met een magische fluit wordt een prins er door de Koningin van de Nacht op uitgestuurd om haar dochter te bevrijden uit de handen van de wrede Sarastro. Maar tijdens zijn missie ontdekt de prins dat de wereld anders in elkaar zit dan hem was voorgespiegeld. Wat begon als een reddingsoperatie verandert in een muzikaal louteringsritueel van jonge mensen die zich klaarmaken om het stokje over te nemen van de oude garde. Die Zauberflöte is een opera met veel lagen: komisch en diepzinnig, humanistisch en feeëriek, complex en toegankelijk.

A4-tjes veranderen voor je ogen in vogels, een stel lege flessen wordt een klokkenspel en een bewegend platform is op het ene moment een berg, dan weer een gevangenis en even later plotseling een vergadertafel. Door met elementaire middelen de fantasie van de toeschouwers te prikkelen, toont McBurney de toverkracht van het theater. De muzikale leiding is in handen van de veelzijdige dirigent Riccardo Minasi, die bij DNO eerder Händels Rodelinda en Mozarts Le nozze di Figaro met groot succes dirigeerde.

 

DE CAST
De Nederlandse bariton Thomas Oliemans schittert opnieuw in de rol van de even komische als ontwapenende Papageno. Hij deelt het podium met sopraan Ying Fang (Pamina), die met rollen in Le nozze di Figaro en Der Freischütz uitgroeide tot een publiekslieveling bij DNO. De jonge, opkomende tenor Mingjie Lei neemt de uitdagende rol van prins Tamino voor zijn rekening, terwijl de gevierde bas Christof Fischesser de rol van zonnepriester Sarastro vertolkt.
