“How can you not love the circus? How can a circus be boring? exclaims one of the characters in the operetta. It is in the circus, the famous St. Petersburg circus of Ciniselli, that the main events of the famous operetta by Imre Kalman, called by him "Princess of the Circus", take place.

In the recent past, an uncle deprived his nephew of his rightful share of the inheritance, explaining his act by the fact that his young wife Theodora so wished. Deprived of a livelihood, the young man was forced to join a troupe of itinerant artists. After going through years of wandering and humiliation, he made a name for himself in the acting world, becoming a famous circus acrobat. And today he again tours in St. Petersburg. With his performance, the action of Kalman's operetta begins.

Performing every evening in the circus arena under the pseudonym "Mr. X", he notices one of the regular visitors to the performances and falls in love with her. At first, he does not even suspect that this beauty is his uncle's widow. Further events drag them into a whirlwind of misunderstandings, deceit and intrigue. The sharply dramatic conflict that arises between the characters turns out to be just an unfortunate misunderstanding - the brotherhood of circus performers living according to the laws of friendship and honor helps young people find their happiness. At the end of the operetta, the haughty beauty Theodora and the enigmatic Mr. X finally unite their hearts.
