“ Spain, 16th century. State and church are fighting a relentless, destructive struggle to gain dominion over the people. Every rebellion, every attempt to establish a humane social order is stifled in its germ. The ideals of humanism are doomed to death, and its representatives perform at the bonfire of the Inquisition. The greatest victim is the king's son, Prince Don Carlos. He is the one who dares to love, to dream, to act for the freedom of the oppressed people, to oppose the state and the church, to shake their system of power, ”writes Frank Hilbrich, director of the lecture, and continues:“He portrays this painful realization of Verdi Schiller’s play Don Carlos with grandiose music. There is no other composer besides him for whom individual freedom would have been so important. With his opera he paints a frightening picture of human civilization. ”
Verdi poured the original Schiller drama, almost every line of which is influenced by socio-political thoughts, into music with an emphasis on individual emotions, spiritual vibrations. Frank Hilbrich, a long-established director in the German-speaking world, has gained international fame not only for his contemporary operas but also for his performances of Wagner.

Minden lázadást, minden emberséges társadalmi rend felállítására vonatkozó kísérletet csírájában elfojtanak. A humanizmus eszméi eleve halálra vannak ítélve, képviselői az inkvizíció máglyáján végzik. A legnagyobb áldozat éppen a király fia, Don Carlos herceg. Ő az, aki mer szeretni, álmodni, fellépni az elnyomott nép szabadsága érdekében, ellenszegülni az államnak és az egyháznak, megingatva azok hatalmi rendszerét” – írja Frank Hilbrich, az előadás rendezője, majd így folytatja: „Verdi Schiller Don Carlos című színdarabjának ezt a fájdalmas felismerését grandiózus zenével jeleníti meg. Nincs rajta kívül még egy zeneszerző, aki számára az egyéni szabadság ilyen fontos lett volna. Operájával félelmetes képet fest az emberi civilizációról.”
Verdi az eredeti Schiller-drámát, melynek szinte minden sorát társadalmi-politikai gondolatok hatják át, úgy öntötte zenébe, hogy a hangsúly az egyéni érzelmekre, lelki rezdülésekre került. Frank Hilbrich, a német nyelvterületen már régóta elismert rendező a kortárs operák mellett leginkább Wagner-előadásaival szerzett nemzetközi hírnevet.
