Nikola Diskić sings the champagne aria in Ekaterina Vasileva's production of Don Giovanni. God and the world, love and sex, guilt and punishment and all the rest is what »Don Giovanni«, premiered in 1787 at the Count Nostitz National Theater in Prague, is all about. For the "Mannheim Summer" Mozart's master opera became the occasion for a directing competition. The 27-year-old Russian Ekaterina Vasileva and her stage and costume designer Sonya Kobozeva prevailed from 50 submissions from seven countries; it is their first production in Germany. The director had come up with by far the most unusual concept in the competition – a concept that, in a sense, breaks the boundaries of common sense and good taste. Because Vasileva focuses on the comedic aspect of Mozart's work and creates a grotesquely exaggerated and disproportionate world for it.
