In het Dubbelconcert van Johannes Brahms is het dubbel genieten, want er staan maar liefst twee solisten op het podium: de Georgische sterviolist Lisa Batiashvili en de Duitse topcellist Maximilian Hornung. Chef-dirigent Lorenzo Viotti leidt het orkest in de prachtige Symfonie nr. 7 van Antonín Dvořák.

Het Concert voor viool, cello en orkest was Johannes Brahms’ verzoeningsgebaar naar violist Joseph Joachim, een goede vriend met wie hij ruzie had. Het dubbelconcert staat volledig in het teken van samenspel en is soms zo intiem als kamermuziek, om vervolgens met het hele orkest flink uit te pakken. Met dat samenspel zit het wel goed bij violist Lisa Batiashvili en cellist Maximilian Hornung: op Batiashvili’s nieuwste cd ‘City Lights’ klinken zij samen al fantastisch.

De drie laatste symfonieën van Antonín Dvořák zijn absolute meesterwerken. Symfonie nr. 9 ‘Uit de Nieuwe Wereld’ is Dvořáks grootste hit, maar de meeste kenners zijn het erover eens dat de Symfonie nr. 7 nóg beter is. Geïnspireerd door de symfonieën van Johannes Brahms schreef Dvořák een symfonie vol prachtige melodieën en met een ongekende diepgang.

The Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra was Johannes Brahms' gesture of appeasement to violinist Joseph Joachim, a close friend with whom he had a quarrel. The double concerto is entirely devoted to ensemble playing and is sometimes as intimate as chamber music, before going all out with the entire orchestra. Violinist Lisa Batiashvili and cellist Maximilian Hornung are fine with that interplay: on Batiashvili's latest CD 'City Lights' they already sound fantastic together.

Antonín Dvořák's last three symphonies are absolute masterpieces. Symphony No. 9 'From the New World' is Dvořák's biggest hit, but most connoisseurs agree that Symphony No. 7 is even better. Inspired by the symphonies of Johannes Brahms, Dvořák wrote a symphony full of beautiful melodies and with unprecedented depth.
