Pospólstwo więc święci Dziady tajemnie w kaplicach lub pustych domach niedaleko cmentarza […]” – pisał Adam Mickiewicz we wstępie do II części słynnego dramatu. Być może sam brał niegdyś udział w tym ludowym obrządku, w którym pogański zwyczaj mieszał się z chrześcijańską tradycją. Niewykluczone, że i Moniuszko miał sposobność uczestniczenia w obrzędzie Dziadów, choć dziś trudno znaleźć na to dowody.

Nie ulega jednak wątpliwości, że natchnieniem dla kompozytora była Mickiewiczowska poezja – Moniuszko doskonale wydobył w Widmach naturalną muzyczność tkwiącą w opisanym przez Mickiewicza rytuale. Silna integracja pierwiastka literackiego i muzycznego sprawiła, że dzieło to jest uważane za jeden z najświetniejszych przykładów romantycznej kantaty.

Pierwsze wzmianki o planach umuzycznienia dramatu narodowego wieszcza znajdujemy w korespondencji Moniuszkowskiej już u progu lat pięćdziesiątych XIX wieku. Natomiast prapremiera ukończonej kantaty scenicznej odbyła się w Salach Redutowych Teatru Wielkiego w drugą rocznicę wybuchu Powstania Styczniowego – 22 stycznia 1865 roku. Kompozycja wzbudziła zachwyt publiczności. Jeszcze w tym samym roku równie entuzjastycznie przyjęto Widma we Lwowie. Jakże silne wrażenie musiało wywrzeć na zniewolonym przez zaborców narodzie tak żywe wspomnienie dawnych obrządków…

Przesłanie zaklęte w Mickiewiczowskich wersach jest uniwersalne, a fascynacja tajemniczym misterium trwa do dziś. Dowodem na to jest niegasnąca popularność przedstawienia, którym Polska Opera Królewska zainaugurowała pierwszy sezon swojej działalności.

The common people, therefore, Saints Dziady secretly in chapels or empty houses near the cemetery [...], wrote Adam Mickiewicz in the introduction to the second part of the famous drama. Perhaps he himself once participated in this folk rite in which pagan custom was mixed with Christian tradition. It is possible that Moniuszko also had the opportunity to participate in the Dziady rite, although today it is difficult to find evidence of this.

There is no doubt, however, that the composer was inspired by Mickiewicz's poetry - Moniuszko perfectly highlighted the  natural  musicality inherent in the ritual described by Mickiewicz. The strong integration of the literary and musical elements has made this work one of the finest examples of a romantic cantata.

The first mentions of plans to musicalise the drama of the national poet can be found in Moniuszko's correspondence at the beginning of the 1850s. On the other hand, the world premiere of the completed stage cantata took place in the Redoubt Rooms of the Grand Theater on the second anniversary of the January Uprising - on January 22, 1865. The composition delighted the audience. In the same year, the  Phantoms  in Lviv was received with equal enthusiasm. What a strong impression must have had on the nation enslaved by the partitioning powers such a vivid memory of the old rites ...

The message enchanted in Mickiewicz's verses is universal, and the fascination with the mysterious mystery continues to this day. This is evidenced by the unwavering popularity of the performance with which the Polish Royal Opera inaugurated the first season of its activity.
